Hi all I'm just about to get back my much awaited Arp Omni 1 next week...what would the best effects box to use with her for the joy division sound...I know they used the Omni 2... But I couldn't find one for love nor money.
Do you think I would be a long way off the sound of the 2 having the 1...I'm hoping not.

Re: Arp omni 1 questions
As I recall, they used the Melos DE-1 analogue echo with the Omni for the keyboard sound on Love Will Tear Us Apart, and the Melos was also used a lot on other tracks. There used to be a lot of those around, and they're pretty long-lived (I still have mine from 1981) so you should be able to find one. Martin Hannett's units look slightly different from the more common ones if you happen to see them in photos, but the sound seems to have been the same.
I'd expect any analogue echo would work similarly, though. I can recall some flanging on the live stuff at the time, which I'd expect was being used on the Omni.

Re: Arp omni 1 questions
That Melos wasn't some high end device, it was a cheap unit designed to compete with better delays made by Roland, Yamaha and others.
It was made in Japan, imported and sold under various names in different countries. In the USA, it was the Stage DE-1.

There's one on eBay right now for $280 BIN...ridiculously overproced, BTW.
I'd recommend this instead for $25:

I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.
Re: Arp omni 1 questions
The Melos used to be about £30 on ebay, though I saw one last night after I'd posted, with a basically silly Buy It Now price.
I'd agree the Melos isn't anything special, and I'd expect almost any basic analogue delay would probably do a similar job, though I don't have much experience with other analogue delays. I do, though, have experience with the Behringer VD400. It was so cheap I decided to buy one - after all, how could I lose at that price? Unfortunately I did lose, though. It stopped working after I'd used it a couple of times. I never even got as far as recording a single note (with echoes on it) before it gave up on me. Behringer were completely uninterested when I contacted them.
To be fair, I do have two Behringer Harmonist harmonisers which have been excellent so far. Presumably they make their money on the pile them high and sell them cheap basis, and you take your chance and win some, lose others.
I haven't heard Love Will Tear Us Apart for a long time, but as I recall the sound was done with the delay knob turned almost fully clockwise for a very short delay.
There's a YouTube video somewhere with a guy showing how the Omni was used by Joy Division. I can't remember if he also uses effects, but it would probably be worth checking out anyway.
