Help recreating a synth bass?

Post by PrismCastle » Sat Sep 26, 2015 1:23 am

Hey guys,
I could use a little help from synth masters like you all. So I'm trying to recreate a certain bass and, I kid you not, I've been working on it for years. This is the bass in question, it can be heard best at 2:34

I have no idea what goes on in the studio but I know this artist uses or has used these keyboards:
Microkorg
MS2000(B)
Korg Poly-61
Roland Juno 60

Now I've heard that it's just MS2000 presets but I have both the microkorg and the MS2000B and, albeit close, they just never capture the same characteristics. This makes me even more annoyed because live, the artist plays the bass lines on the MS2000. More so, whatever the mixed oscillators are, they respond nicely to a distortion pedal or distortion in general, heard here:

I'm sure this is more than enough for some help, but any extra details I can give. :D

Welcome to the forum. The key to this sound is the subtle use of oscillator sync. On the MS2000 set osc2 sync on, and modulate its pitch with a small amount of EG. There may be some Filter EG modulation as well. I don't know what Osc waveforms to use.

Thank you!

I was curious if the waveform could help find which oscillators to use. Would I be able to figure it out if I had one clean note played? I have a sample I ripped from one of their songs and I've been trying to make them match but I feel as if there is an easier way. I'm only using software right now because I'm deployed and there is no way I'm taking my synths with me

What software are you using? I could conjure something on SuperwaveP8 or shareware synths. Waveforms would probably be Saw, or Square or combination thereof.

I'm using FL Studio. I try to just find soft synth that would make sense like a recreation of 80's synths and then do all my editing in the daw.

Edit:
In searching of this forum and a few others, I've come across many people saying that in the times the songs were being produced, he used a DW-8000. Further reading has shown that this particular synth is one of the best at making powerful bass tones.

I was able to get close using Superwave. Small amount of sync is it, and plenty of filter resonance. I was using triangle waveforms. But the filters and/or envelopes on Superwave were not quite right. It seems to me the character of the filters and envelope, whatever synth it need be, will make a difference how close you can get.

I just got pretty darn close, almost spot on, using a System-1. The cool thing is bumping the resonance produces the same high-pitch effect heard during the break.

Would you be able to post a sample?
Unless that's too much of a hassle.

What were, like your main parameters, so I can transpose in one of my soft synths?

Check it out. Forgive my bad playing. I would have used the arpeggiator but its gate time is set to 50% which doesn't fit the song. For system-1 owners I think there is a way to change gate times, I'm not sure. It was difficult because I had to change the octave in realtime for the low B-notes. In the latter half I'm tweaking the resonance knob, the filter isn't tuned to get exactly the same result as on the song.

Two triangle waves both set at 32'
Sync on Osc2
Filter Envelope to Osc2 Pitch 60-70%
Filter Resonance 60%
Filter amount is around 20%
Filter Envelope is around 60%
Shape the filter envelope so decay happens within the 8th note duration.
Amp Envelope is just a gate, decay/sustain full, release near zero
