Casio cz 101 programming / editor

Post by princefan3 » Fri Mar 18, 2016 8:52 am

A friend of mine has said he does not rate the cz 101 unless you have an editor available to unlock it's potential.

Is this a true enough statement to make.

You Can use the front panel of the cz, however
it is easier to edit the envelopes with an editor.
Check out coffeeshop editor. I have it because some
Of the buttons on my cz does not work.

Cheers

It's not hard at all to edit from the front panel. As mentioned, only the EGs are at all complicated.

That's not because there are eight stages but because it has the rate and level parameters common with digital EGs. Unlike an ADSR where you have three rates (A, D, R) and one level (S) you can do a lot more but at the cost of 16 parameters instead of 4.

When the CZ-101 was new, it sold for under $500 while a computer with MIDI interface and patch editor software could easily set you back $1500. Not too many people used editors ;)
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

When I was a teenager and the CZ-101 was my first digital synth, I programmed that thing to death, made lots and lots of sounds.

it's not difficult, as actually the synthesis functions are fairly straightforward, and not every patch needs all 8 stages filled for all envelopes for both oscillators.

Is programming a CZ-101 as convenient and quick as an analog synth with ADSR knobs? No. But it's not hard, and like everything, it purely depends on the user - whether or not that care enough to use it, explore and make sounds. Today, where everyone has a million synths, someone may decide that it's too much of an effort to bother with. Back then, it was all I had, and I liked playing with synths, so it didn't seem like a chore.

A CZ editor doesn't "unlock" potential, it just tries to make editing quicker and more convenient. There is nothing really you can do with an editor that you can't do on the CZ itself, in terms of intentional patch design.

I agree but You have a better view of the patch
With an editor. You do not need one;-)

Thanks all for your replys very greatful as always to you.

I was hoping to find the CZ a bit more inspiring than it is...unfortunately I tend to like quick workflow over programming as I loose interest very quickly if it's not what I want to hear...I tend to laugh out loud when you always read from the manuals that this so and so synthesizer can make any sound you want it too...my arse...

I want to really work without computers and have as small a set up as possible.....CZ s and DX s usually mean more need of sequencers to run them or editors to sit and ponder the meaning of life...more cables and more power leads blah blah blah...

However I will be investing in the korg Volca FM just because of it's built in sequencer more than anything.
