Roland JX-305 Pitch bender LFO / Version

Post by Artly_There » Tue Dec 20, 2016 12:25 am

I have a Roland JX-305 with a non-working LFO function on the pitch bender. Push the bender up nothing happens.

The force sensitive resistor seems to check out OK…intermittently, does decrease the ohms as pressed, but it is hard to measure. Just foam and some copper film, laminate. Not much to go wrong there…so...

Service manual suggests Q6 and Q7 may be at fault for such issues, but not sure how to test. Any generics those surface mount transistors can be subbed with? Am loath to work on the main board, everyone knows how fragile the flash chips are with their faulty soldering. Another issue noticed is that the copper heat-sink on the main chip is lifted, has come unstuck from the thermo-stickie stuff.

Pitch bend up and down works fine, only the LFO is not working for modulation. i wonder if a recalibration would work?

Other thing is no way to check the System version, since the method in the service notes fails to work, I can hold the 3 buttons, but nothing changes when applying the others.

??

If the JX-305 is similar to the JP-8000 from a year earlier, running the Test Mode and/or resetting can fix a multitude of problems. The bender/mod limits are stored in memory and can get corrupted, causing either control to fail; running the test (#11) resets them, and also displays the values the CPU sees while you're running the test. I'd certainly do that before looking for any hardware issues.

For reading the version numbers, do all 6 switches work normally otherwise? Roland manuals are quite good, and the procedure here from Sept. 2010 is the same as in the 1998 service notes, so the odds of it being incorrect are pretty slim. The only thing that's a little unclear (to me, anyway) is whether you're supposed to press and release 4, 6 and 8 in order, or if you're supposed to press and hold them, in order. I suspect the latter, since it doesn't say anything about releasing.
