Roland D50 Pitch Bend Weirdness

Post by robphys » Sun Jan 15, 2017 2:35 pm

Hello
I've just bought a D50 with a broken pitch bend - the bender plate has snapped off by the screws.

Before I get a replacement I need to know why when you do use the pitch bend the balance on each patch changes not the pitch!! What's that all about!

I have checked the connections on the mainboard and they look OK.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks Rob

You're not referring to the joystick above the keys, are you?

Here is some more info on the problem.

I put the synth into test mode and tested the controllers. The joystick work as it should if you move it to the right of centre, but on moving to the left the pitch bend signal also changes (along with X and Y position).

I am thinking it could be the bender board OR the main board. Am going to try try the main board in another D50 I have (and am selling if anyone's interested?) and will report back once I have.

Thanks for the replies so far. Together I'm sure we'll crack it - or break it up for parts!

Update 2
I've tried the motherboard in a working D50 and it works fine.
Come to think of it when I bought the bloke said there was something rattling inside and when I opened it up I found the broken legs off the pitch bender plate and the 2 screws by the bender board. I wonder if during playing the screws have shorted out a cap or transistor or chip?!

What do people think? Replacement is £40 on syntaur - but out of stock. Try replacing trannies and caps or break up for spare parts?

Any advice gratefully received.

I have replaced the entire pitchbender unit in my D-50 with a U-20 one. Check this:

Any pitchbender from a U-20 / JV series might fit.

i have a similar situation to this as well.

my d50 joystick will only work when the pitch bender is unplugged. some times my pitch bender will perform tasks like turning on and off the write protection and stuff. the joystick then works almost like a pitch bend as well as a transposer.... very strange. i have ordered a replacement joy stick, hopefully this helps. another weird thing is that the pitch bender also had a screw missing that was rattling around inside the case when i got the unit. does anyone have a replacement pitch bender for sale? maybe its the circuit board?
