Nice CZ bass on that first track!
Lots of influences in there, reminds me a bit of Orbital in the kinda cyclic themes...

Thanks! And your great ear knows the patches!! I think that CZ bass is a slight variation of a patch from a commercial sysex disk I bought for the Atari. I think the company was called Leicester? Do you remember them?
That piece is a combination of about 3 pieces I did when I figured out step entry on the CZ-5000. I didn't know about Orbital 'til 1995, but ya it's the thing Paul Hartnoll loves doing, everything in 16ths and hocketted. Apart from that bass, the sounds I've used here are "more betterer" versions of what was on the CZ. Like, I've used Monark on the other bass- because a CZ could never do that. But layering CZ bass with Moog bass is a great trick.

Ah, I just think I've probably heard just about every sound the CZ series can do, at this pointmadtheory wrote:Thanks! And your great ear knows the patches!!
Probably Leister Productions:madtheory wrote:I think that CZ bass is a slight variation of a patch from a commercial sysex disk I bought for the Atari. I think the company was called Leicester? Do you remember them?
"Leister is an american company (Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania - owner: Frank Leister) which edited soundbanks for several 80's synths models."
They did banks for a lot of the popular synths of the day, the DX7/M1/D50 etc.
Leister Productions is still around, making Mac/iOS apps: http://www.leisterpro.com

It's that digital + analog combination that can work so well. Dave Gamson (Scritti Politti) loved layering the DX7 with a Minimoog for his basses.
Interestingly enough, while I loved the CZ-101 back in the day, and used it to death, obviously it was a budget synth compared to the pro stuff of the time - but now I'm more familiar with other synths, it's surprising jus how good a job the CZ's phase distortion can do at doing both digital and analog-style sounds (within limitations, of course.)

Yes it is limited. It's no P5 but it has some nice quirks.
