Komodo Dragon - second Techno/Rave-ish stuff

Post by TrondC » Wed Feb 17, 2010 5:31 pm

I made two mixes, one raw and un-eq'd (right from the mixer), and the second one with some eq'ing to the massive bass. still too much bass I think, I can't think straight after a couple hours of this on my ears. this is the less bass-dominant mix:

basically 1 MD pattern, 2 Monomachine patterns, some randomness on the KP3 and some fx abuse on the zero mixer. as my other tracks, this is a stereo recording of the mixer.

this is the second track after I put the cozy dub stuff aside as an attempt to have something to play at clubs

the track feels, somewhat unfinished to me, any tips would be appreciated

I love everything you do mate, and this is no exception :D. It's very minimalistic in a good way and i love it. But i don't know if the structure or composition is very danceable, it doesn't feel like there's a big enough Buildup/climax. I don't know if this would get a great response in a Club.

thanx :) those are my concerns too. I have some 6-7 similar drafts, and what they have in common is that I can't seem to make things build up as well as I'd like it to. have some days off now, so I will have another go at this track, as well as atleast one more coming this week. buildups/climaxes are definately something I don't handle too well. maybe I could make a seperate pattern for each biuld, and a "post-climax" pattern with accented bassdrums or whatever..

thanx for the feedback, it makes all the difference to hear other peoples opinions :)

IF you don't already try listening to a bit of goa trance. These songs have insane build ups and climax's.

What's next Mr Tool? Snare build ups and Alpha Juno Hoover sounds... hmmm think not, it doesn't quite fit into Trond's style of music that he does.

alpha juno hoover sounds = rave.

i didn't ask him to start making goa trance music, but you can't say goa doesn't handle build ups/the climax excellently, and not always through bloody snare rolls. he himself stated that he wanted something people could really dance to at a live show.

Please, no need to be so condescending, it's only the internet.

while not a big fan of the "trance" buildup really, that's good advice nevertheless to seek other generes for inspiration. I'd like to preserve the overall fell, keeping it low and moody, yet dancable, with bigger peaks and drops. this version gets too static, it's building up to something that's not there. maybe not a "club" track as such, but still a bit mellow compared to what I was trying to do. and track #3 in the series coming today hopefully, and I'll see if I can re-record this track again also :)

now back to tweaking

Trond would find it easier to add a house groove to his track, which is the standard 4/4, but often adding a shuffle would add more groove to it. It's easy to take your existing track and modify it slightly, so that it is more danceable. I know people can dance to minimal, but that type of danceable minimal needs a little groove.

Besides House grooves are more club-friendly...

Alpha Juno does not always equal rave, unless your doing a praga khan stylee, i'd more say Gabber (dutch hardcore) was the prime user of the hoover sound however twisted and distorted it became (ie: namely paul elstak etc)
