There was some thread at some point recently where I demanded that I used to be funky. I recently dug up some tracks from that time and thought I would share them with all of you.
These three songs were written between 1994 and 1995. They were recorded using an Ensoniq EPS-16+ and a Fostex X-26 cassette four-track.
Traveled Miles
Little Green Glass Heart
Slave

Re: When I Was Funky
i like them. love how bass guitar sounds, realy groovy. at the beginning of travelled miles, was it some noise/crackling of the tape or from a vinyl?

Thanks for listening!novielo wrote:i like them. love how bass guitar sounds, realy groovy. at the beginning of travelled miles, was it some noise/crackling of the tape or from a vinyl?
I love that bass, too... it's amazing that it's just a sample for the Ensoniq EPS-16+! (no, I don't remember which one!)
The crackling was a vinyl sample.
Hey, thanks!jeeroj wrote:i'm only halfway through the first but i'm going to stay locked all afternoon. Man this music is fffffffffresh
Ha ha, it's really weird you would say that. I actually watched Fresh Prince every day after work around the time I recorded one of these songs. Or, maybe it's not weird at all.clubbedtodeath wrote:I could certainly see Will Smith circa 1991 getting jiggy to these...
Thanks, Ryan. YOU are cool.clubbedtodeath wrote:This is soooooo cool.

Nice one Marc. I used to work direct to tape back then too, mixing and playing a the same time... ah, those were the days.
But yeah, they're definitely funky. I can imagine you in a sideways baseball cap and a dyed blonde flat-top, nodding slowly to your tapes as you drive around s l o w l y. Ahaha.

Yes, they were dark and interesting times. The backing harmonies on the song "Slave" were sung directly into the sampler while listening to a metronome in headphones, and then merged into one sample, for example. It was a very challenging way to work.
This is what I actually looked like when I recorded these songs:

It did have a flat top, and there was a dyed part, so you were at least close in those respects.
