would be nice to get some comments lol - i've tweaked this for days...EQing, panning, levelling and arranging. i listened to it a thousand times on all kinds of sound systems. (for the first time) i wanted to create a mix that does not sound dull/boring. now i can listen to this on my laptop speakers and it doesn't sound absolutely bad - great!!! i think it's amazing how much processing needs to be done to get such a result (probably it's only because i'm a noob?). the master fx chain is: linear phase eq (low/highcuts), eq, reverb, low level compressor, high level compressor, center (spatial imager), s1 shuffler (another spatial imager), limiter. :o
i was also fascinated about how the same compressor on the master can render the mix completely dull and lifeless when using certain values (like very short release). i've tried to get a better (higher) RMS level using the low level compressor. in this mix the RMS is -10dB on average (without it -14dB). i am not sure how this compares to current/modern productions. anyone knows? btw, my opinion is that loudness is part of nowadays music and i think we are used to it and "need" it, at least currently. so it makes sense to make it loud!
anyway...how does this sound for you? thx

ah, don't take it personal if no-one zaps back with comments right away. it's a synth forum, not production.

you shouldn't need all those fx to get that simple of a mix happening, but i don't know what you're working with. i track through console EQ and outboard so maybe yours is a whole different process.
as for the last part about loudness i don't mess with that; let the mastering guy handle that - it's his specialty, and no matter how talented i or anyone else thinks i am on my own, it doesn't matter because the mastering guy is indifferent and hears 1000s of tracks like yours and mine (and he gets PAID to) and he knows the sweet spots and cumulative effect of his gear far better than I would ever want to.
it's "chasing a dragon i'll never catch", basically. (the only way is to become a mastering engineer, of course)
compressors actually reduce volume; they don't boost unless there's a make-up amp strapped to the on the output stage, as many do. thus they can suck the energy out of mixes; which is over-doing things.
but more often a good arrangement of the tune, independent of any post-processing(well preceding it) will solve far more "mix problems" than tweaking a compressor or any other outboard or plugin can ever do.... imho, that s**t is the crutch of way too many modern production 'styles'.

yeah well - i had an earlier mix lying around and when i listened to it i was like WTF! it had air, drums where breathing and stuff was flying - ....basically all my work that made it sound good before is failure now. :)
i will pay for a mastering guy when i think it will be necessary - i would need some awesome tunes and money tho.
until then i'll try further.
btw, the file is now a new mix - less limited and no low level compression (it made things loud but muddy and less airy). and here's a different flavor of that tune: "Speed Unlimiter (Warp Label)"
