Yamaha qy 10 help

my unit seems fine except for the fact that it won't let me set the tempo. I did as the manual said, but the tempo doesnt change from ***. The manual says that *** means "external clock," what does that mean? I need help...please.

its expecting clock from the midi input. Check the manual on how to turn it off to internal
