Prophet 600 vs matrix 1000, 6, etc.

Post by otto » Wed Aug 22, 2007 3:04 am

I'm curious about varying opinions on these synths. They have similar specs although the P-600 is VCO and the matrix is DCO. The matrix has more mod and routing capabilities but the p-600 has knobs and hardware control. listening to demos the 6-600 sounds a bit more buzzy and menacing and the matrix sounds smoother but nice and lush. What are your opinions comparing the two?

really depends what style of work you're into I'd say. I've had both of these and the P600 is great for psychedelic, dubby stuff and the matrix for crisp techno-y/ambient lines.

I'm not usually one to complain about the difficulty of programming a synth but the Matrix 6 is difficult. Programming is menu driven and with all of the possible modulation routings it is difficult to remember what you've routed where.

Sound wise, the Matrix 6 is rather smooth sounding. All the modulation keeps the sound from sounding boring but it never really sounds thick and warm like a Prophet.

I hate when I do that... I didn't want it to come off as me not doing my research. Opinions might not even change my mind but I do like to see what people think and I feel these 2 are similar enough to compare. Having played neither I am hardly expert enough to provide an adequate answer.

to the contrary, it sounded like you had done your research... but I still think that these are different enough that trying to do a "which is better? " post isn't going to be a very effective way of comparing them.
