What misconceptions about your synths drive you nuts?

a guy told me when I played live with SYB-3 : "hey, can you play strings, or horn, or guitar sounds or sax with your synth ? real instruments or kinda ? so what ?"

... he was drunk, of course... but desapointed...

that bit of c**p when the marion systems module was out....they kept calling it something like future proof, or "will never go out of style cuz you can upgrade" etc...not just marion of course, but some other companies too.

1.future proofing never works
2.name me a synth that is truly out of date. it still synthesizes!

That one is just stupid. You could (i doubt it) or you could spend $10 and have a hardware device that you made yourself and will get much more enjoyment out of.

Correct me if im wrong but dont all higher bit samplers have the ability to lower the bit rate for storage reasons, and if its about the analog filters in some early samplers like the emulator II. why not just run your samples via your analog mono synth that more than likely has an external input to the filter?

Not all samplers have the ability to lower the bit resolution. And as for the analog filters not all analog monos have an aux in. Plus with only one filter you would have a paraphonic sampler, not polyphonic.

For the cost it would take to make a paraphonic sampler if you didn't have all the right hardware it would just be cheaper to buy an 8 bit sampler. Heck I saw a Mirage on Craigslist for $75 a few months ago.

Oh don't even get me started on Midi.

and my personal favorite...

"What do you mean your novation keyboard doesn't make any sound? Is it broken? What's the point of a keyboard that doesn't make any sound?"

And then you have to explain midi and midi controllers and how you can plug your "novation keyboard" into a macbook pro and you play on the keys but it's actually the computer generating the sound based on control data sent by the keyboard, etc. etc. etc.

It's all so frustrating.

But on the other hand, with one midi controller and a computer/a rack of synths you'll never have to hear the "why do you need so many keyboards?" one.

Of course, the big one you hear about MIDI is that people think it's some kind of compressed-audio format, like MP3. Back in the Usenet days, on rec.music.synth, you could count on one of the first questions from nearly every newbie being, "Where can I get a WAV to MIDI converter?"

I listen to a lot of metal, and people that like metal seem to think all you can with a synth is make dance music. or 'weak' metal. i hate that. synth can add good stuff to most kinds of music, and even by itself can do way more than techno.

they probably never heard of fear factory, cradle of death, etc right?

even sepultura has used synths at times...

Someone mentioned how their head explodes when they hear a non-synthesist calling their synthesizers organs, keyboards, etc. I had this a couple of years ago too, but not too long ago, I realised it doesn't really matter in the world.

You can call my DX7 an organ, keyboard, a preset machine, even a bagpipe and, I promise, my eye shall not blink

But if you ever say the FM8 sounds exactly alike then... bewarrrrrre
