Yamaha RX5 ROM Carts

Post by Computer Controlled » Tue Feb 16, 2010 5:14 am

Does anyone know if the RX5 has more ROM carts available than the one that came with it originally?

No he used a crystal ball, hence the "c**p".
Try the obscure phrase "Yamaha RX5" then click on, oh there's quite a few, sonic state reviews for starters. Here's where it gets difficult....READ the entries. This round is for free...the users mention the Latin, Heavy metal and Jazz cartridges by name. Another user mentions he has 4.
Move on to another site, wash, rinse, repeat.

I believe there were four carts: WRC01 Latin Percussion (which came with the RX5), WRC02 Jazz, WRC03 Heavy Metal, and WRC04 Sound Effects. I have WRC03. It consists of kicks, snares, toms, a distorted power chord, and a picked bass sample. The sounds are okay.

I'm kind of looking for the other carts if they are cheap enough. I thought that I was getting WRC02 when I purchased WRC03 and would be most interested in that one. You would think they would come up on ebay more often than they do. The RX5 was a reasonably popular drum machine in its day.

The only one i've seen for sale is the one that comes with the RX5 when bought new. But they were trying to get almost $100 for it. I've never seen any other ones ever come up for sale. Maybe they've all been broken? Anyway, thanks for all the info!!

I don't have the cartridge that was supposed to come with the RX-5, but I do have the WRC04 Sound Effects one (picked it up on Ebay for $15 or so, sometime in the past two years).

I keep telling myself I need to use the RX more. It's not the most intuitive thing to program, but I feel like it has lots of cool editing potential. I did set it up once so that the entire top row of twelve pads were all claps at different pitches; that was pretty cool.

Hmm, I remember finding a list of the cartridges at least once before, but after a few minutes of casual googling I can't turn anything up, so don't feel too bad. ;) I've seen various cartridges come up on Ebay now and again, except for the fabled third-party 808/909 one, which at this point I'm inclined to think is purely apocryphal.

It's cool, adds some sounds that are substantially different from the stock ones. If you can find one for decent price (there don't seem to be enough of these around to establish a 'going rate', but I probably wouldn't pay more than $20-something), go for it.

The waveforms are: Process BD 1, Process BD 2, Process BD 3, Process SD 1, Process SD 2, Process SD 3, Process SD 4, Process SD 5, Process SD 6, Process Tom 1, Process Tom 2, Process Tom 3, FM Tom, FM SD, Process Roto, Hybrid Tom, Splash Cym, Door Slam, Synth Bass

Too bad the RX-5 isn't more popular, then maybe some enterprising DIY genius might figure out how to burn custom carts for it.

I have all for cartridges. They pop up on Ebay a few times a year. Another good place to check are older, established music stores. They often have a few boxes in the back of c**p that's been lying around for years. I picked up a box of quick discs this way as well as a pedal for the Rhodes Chroma.
