sh 101 or juno 60 with jsq 60

Post by dreaded » Wed Feb 17, 2010 9:39 pm

I just bought a yamaha cs10. I really was looking for a sh 101 but heard the cs 10 has great low end. I just can across two great offers yesterday, the juno 60 or sh 101, both in great condition. The juno is 600 with sequencer. The sh 101 is in superb condition and has original strap and grip for 500. I'm partial to the roland but already have a mono synth. I want to do electro disco compositions. Any thoughts?

The Juno 60 with sequencer will be better for your setup and is a way better deal. No brainer.

Also, this will probably get moved to Buyer's Guide or Synth Shootouts. So keep your eyes open.

Actually, I just re-read your original post that the 101 is in great condition and comes with strap and grip. Can you make 1100 happen? At those prices I would buy both. If they're both from the same person maybe you could offer 1000 for both. If you didn't like either of them you could make some money later. I sold my 101 a couple of weeks ago with no grip or strap, had a couple of little issues, for $500. And if you liked both you could keep both.

But if you could only make one happen I would still go with the Juno 60 and sequencer combo.

No, it isn't the same guy. It just happened that I stumbled upon both at the same time and was trying to make a quick decision. I ended up getting the Juno. I think I made the right choice but can't help second guessing.

i'm the guy that bought his sh-101! heh its great so far...and I mainly bought it after seeing Z play his for a little bit over in Dallas one day; well that and I read that the Knife used it a good deal on their Silent Shout album, which I'm still in love with.

i have to say though - its very punchy - i am doing weird electro disco type stuff and it cuts through everything a bit much, so I'm going to try it with some delays and other effects this weekend and see what sounds i can get from there. its great for the low end...but as far as a full lead, it doesn't work yet for me on disco electro...i think with a live band set up going it might sound better and blend in more, but mixed strictly with other synths - it cuts right through everything, almost way too much.

but hey - i've only had it a few days - maybe i have no idea what i'm talking about yet...just my two cents from someone that just purchased the 101.

Lots of people love the SH-101. Just check the page here. When I started collecting synths I wanted one more than anything. Chris Carter said it was his favorite mono of all time. I just think that if you have a CS-10 that you needed a poly more than you need another mono.

I could never get with its sound for what I do. I had two MC-202s previous to the 101 very similar sound, and the sound is great but for me, as rharris said it is just really aggressive. I found it too aggressive. So it depends what kind of electro/disco you are making. For me I think of Morgan Geist, Lindstrom, Prins Thomas as electro/disco. And the SH-101 is too aggressive for that. But if you are making Gigolo/Kitsune/Justice electro/disco then it would be very good for that. It is Mathew Jonson's favorite synth as well.

I wanted to like it, my friend has one kitted with everything and thinks I'm crazy for selling it, but I like my SH-09 much better. It is more smooth, rounded and vintage sounding. It is more for me.

you summed it up perfectly.

i am quite interested to hear an sh-09 now tho! i want to hear how its different...very interested in one indeed.

i've not tried it yet - but i'm wondering if running the sh-101 thru a better low-pass filtered wouldn't help calm it down too...i would say a moog low-pass, buuuut i can't afford a pedal that expensive right now! i'm going to run it thru my microkorg and use that low-pass filter and see what happens...worth a shot!

Automatic Gainsay has a great video on the SH-09 and I've got a couple of videos on the SH-2 (same as 09, but with one more oscillator).

I prefer the SH-2's sound over the 101: very "bouncy" or "liquidy" to me.

i just watched both - i have to say for me its kind of a tie - but thats because i'm watching intro-videos i guess, and not me actually sitting down to play with each. h**l you saw me in person fall in love with that sh-101 - but when i try to apply it to my own music, i'm kinda stuck...now that doesn't mean i won't find a place for it later, but i'm definitely going to keep my eyes open for both the sh-9 and the sh-2 now just in case i can find them at reasonable prices...they both look fun to play with and explore. i do like the 'liquidy' feeling you're talking about with the sh-2 though...could make some great ambient weirdness if run thru some delay & echo pedals!

What? I know how to make a bass patch. I just find the SH-09 and perhaps its filter, much smoother than the 101.

and for that reason the 101 can only make aggressive hipster electro basslines?

not in your previous post ;)

anyway, for leads there might indeed be better monos. maybe like those with 2 oscs :D

but it's still better than a juno for leads, cause it IS mono and it has portamento
