Maybe you should look into a Dave Smith Mopho Desktop Module. It is kind of like his modern day recreation/rendition of the Sequential Circuits Pro One. You get one of the new or used within your price range. You might even be able to find one of these used in the keyboard version if you want keys. I think these guys are a steal at the price and would be great for basses. I've been teetering back and forth about getting one myself, but I just don't have the room, and I don't know if I really want to get rid of anything I have now.

If I get that, can I hook it via midi to my Novation SL25 to play notes on it?

Yes.

Also here's (right now) a solid deal on one, I've talked myself out of it for financial reasons but maybe you can talk yourself into it.

One last question, again, a very beginner question:
Let's say I get the Mopho (or any synth with midi in/out) and I want the synth to synchronize with Ableton, would I be able to achieve this by having the midi out of my audio interface go into the midi in of the Mopho? Then the midi out of the Mopho would go into the midi in of the SL25?

I might have that wrong..

The easiest way would be: Out of your interface to In of your synth - Out of your keyboard to in of your interface - Set up Live accordingly

Alternatively, If the MIDI In of your SL can be used as a MIDI Merger: Out of your interface, in of your keyboard; out of your keyboard, in of your synth - out of your synth, in of your interface - And again a proper setup so that things don't make sound when they shouldn't
Sorry for my unintentional killing of the English language. I'm Italian, you know :) - "What would Jexus do?" - Stew-diah
