Casio VL-1 VL Tone Problem

Hi VSE'rs,

Have got a Casio VL Tone that's not behaving. It's pitch is all warbly and all over the place, also the Rhythm sounds are strange and sound kinda slow and glitchy (and not in a good way). Tempo doesn't seem to have any affect either, and the demo tune is just a mush of glitch and warbly lead sound.

I thought maybe the pitch problem could be the Electro Caps (one looked visually bad), so I replaced the lot and annoyingly the problem still remains. Shame really as it's in perfect condition cosmetically.

I'm out of ideas, so if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it wholly

I assume you've already checked for leakage and if mainboard tracks bleed. I had something similar occur by accidentally shortcircuit one of the tantalum caps or a couple of ICs when trying to find some interesting bending spots.

Bit confused, do you mean voltage leakage? How do you test for this?

Also, how do you suggest I work out which component it could be? I found some schematics which could help.

I'd guess he means problems from battery leakage. Even good-ol' "dry cells" can leak nasty s**t that can short, or even destroy the copper traces on a circut board.

Nah, seriously this one is like it has been tried out when it was new maybe once or twice and then put in its box (without batteries) and forgotten - pretty damn mint and really clean battery compartment.

I'm thinking it could be one of those tantulums, but how I check to find which one I don't know. I mean I could just go blindly and replace components till it works but there must be some way of diagnosing what's wrong with it, I'm just new to tracing problems in a circuit, a bit of experience would help a lot here I think.
