need help setting up external midi in logic pro

Post by crowlali » Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:25 am

sooo, i have little knowledge of how to set up external midi in logic. i have a 4x4 midisport for my midi interface, and the hardware im using is a roland sh-201, roland tr-707, alesis d4, and an ensoniq eps. how do i set this all up so that the 201 can control everything. i know that i need to plug the midi ins from all the hardware to the midisports outs and the run a midi cable from the midisports in, to the 201's midi out, but how do i set it up in my computers audio/midi settings and in logic?

pleaseee help

Since you mention Logic I assume you're on a Mac. First, you need to install the driver for your Midisport if you haven't already. Once the driver is installed, find the Mac utility "Audio MIDI Setup" and run that. AMS will find your Midisport, but you then need to do an "add device" for each one of your synths. In the description of each one, set the MIDI channels that it transmits and receives on.

Then, you need to draw in the connections. Each of the device icons in AMS has little in and out arrows to indicate the MIDI ports that it supports. Click on one and drag to the corresponding arrow of the device at the other end of the connection, and AMS will draw a line to represent the connection. You need to draw one line for each physical MIDI cable in your setup.

Once you've done this, close AMS and re-start Logic, and it should now know about your synths. I've never used Logic so I don't know how you associate synths with tracks in it; someone else jump in here.

Check your channel numbers in Logic. I've never used Logic so I don't think I can help any further. Someone else jump in here.
