What synthesizers are in these Dance songs?

Post by Kuraudo » Tue Jan 25, 2011 8:07 am

Hello there, I'm new to this forum. Thanks :)

There's a bunch of songs I sorted through and they all have this uniform sound to it. I want to know what it is and where it comes from. Is there ONE vst or ONE keyboard/synth that is closest to have these sounds? Or did the producers make all of these from scratch? I just want to know if theres one identifiable synth in this.

Right now i'm new to learning sound synthesis and will do my best to learn it. So far, I can edit some patches to get them to make sounds if they are somewhere in the ballpark of the preset.

I also looked into Yamaha Synth Extreme (planning to buy) and I already got the MOTIF Xpanded dance pack.

Is this really classic trance? It sounds so different than the raw delay and sawtooth I know trance to be.

The whole set, but paying attention to the bright synth at :18
I need to know how to make a transparent sounding bright saw? is that what u call it?

All of them have a nostalgic sound as if they come from the same device and genre.

Probably the best instant-dance VST out there right now is reFx Nexus. The synth has a lot of patches and expansion packs available, so you can get a *lot* of modern dance type sounds without having to a lot of programming.

I don't know if there is *one* VST doing all of this; frankly, a lot of VSTs can sound similar. Even Superwave and Synth1 (freebies) can do some of this, as well as the Rob Papen stuff (Albino, Blue), reFX Vanguard, z3ta+, etc.

The "transparent sounding bright saw" you refer to may be just the sound of VSTs, which always do seem "bright" to me. Because they lean bright, classic effects like PWM (the first track) sound a bit different than old analogs (which may be what you know of classic trance).

The below is modern club pop, which pretty much is done all "in the box" these days.

yep, not trance at all. sound's alot like j-pop to me. z3ta+ is a pretty sweet free plugin - i used to use it all the time before i bought hardware synths. the sound is definitly a supersaw sound, or "hypersaw" as it's known on the access virus ti. most non-emulation or experimental vsts and virtual analogs should have a bread and butter supersaw.
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

Thanks guys for your replies :) I was guessing it would be from a certain synth like a Roland...whatever or a
Yamaha__insert model here.

I looked into several patches of Vanguard but I don't "hear that sound" I think Z3ta might be closer i guess if you turned off all the effects since its much less raw sounding than Vanguard.

Ninja, how do u like your virus? Doesn't your virus get these patches (or any patch for that matter). Is it a type of sound quality thats difficult to replicate in a software VSTi?

I think I'll spend some time tweaking Z3ta, massive and vanguard... and of course my MOTIF Xs6.
