Re: Korg Monotribe ?
Okay, so after playing with my Monotribe for the past 2 days or so, I have come to the conclusion that - in true Korg fashion - it is ALMOST awesome. Ive worked out that the Sync works just from a metronome click, so I can put a click on a track in Ableton and route it out to sync the Monotribe with the rest of my gear.
One thing I will have to do is hack a MIDI In and Sync if possible - I'm hoping it is as easy as it was on the Monotron.

Re: Korg Monotribe ?
Midi in and sync was easy to mod into the monotron? What gives you that idea?
Doing it on the monotribe would mean adding inputs and code to the CPU which runs the sequencer, not gonna happen in a DIY way.

Re: Korg Monotribe ?
I suppose "easy" was the wrong word to use. "Possible" is probably more accurate. I helped my friend hack his monotron with an Arduino to receive note on/off, pitch bend and modulation wheel messages. I'm hoping it's possible to do the same thing with the 'tribe.Stab Frenzy wrote:Midi in and sync was easy to mod into the monotron? What gives you that idea?

Re: Korg Monotribe ?
I think the sync input is better than using a MIDI in simply for the ease of setting up clock divisions, and the fact that using audio out as sync means I wont suffer the crippling lag problems Im getting at the moment using MIDI!!!
Although I guess with MIDI you could play the 'synth' part easier. I cant play really so I would never really bother MIDIfying something like the monotribe.
I just want separate outputs, and someone to do it for me.

its best to wait for a monotribe 2 with editable drums and midi.

I did say in this other thread...er...that...
"I did say in the other thread:
KORG will build your analogue synth, but it won't have those extra bells and whistles that every SERIOUS SYNTH-GOD MUST HAVE.... if it only did QRSTUV. So instead you bought one of the other 8-million synths on the market......"
And so, for many, it's cool, but not cool enough. If only it did twice as much for twice as much.

Re: Korg Monotribe ?
I'll be honest, I just bought it because I like drum machines, its relatively cheap and it was easy to get hold of one.
I knew not to have any real expectations...
But since everything seems to have a shelf life of about 12 months nowadays I assume the sequel (Monotribe 2: Judgement Day) is closing in, so maybe if I cross my fingers and blindly keep purchasing Korg products they'll give me what I want.... wait... what..?

Not a bad plan, works with most companies. Sell a lot of one thing, make another.
You KNOW this will lead to something else, something bigger with (probably) most (but definitely NOT all) of the short comings addressed.
This music making thing to be a life long journey for so many of us...
and so the customers aint going no where.
A new drum machine in ten years will STILL cause a buzz to the people already making music today.

In regards to myself, that is so true that I actually started laughing out loud....griffin avid wrote:A new drum machine in ten years will STILL cause a buzz to the people already making music today.

Re: Korg Monotribe ?
I have a theory about this that I will explore when I have my monotribe.Stab Frenzy wrote: Doing it on the monotribe would mean adding inputs and code to the CPU which runs the sequencer, not gonna happen in a DIY way.
Basically:
- there is a microprocessor on board. It is probably a stock 8-bit PIC or Atmel microcontroller. It might be a Cypress PSOC as you can do some analog processing on it (weird hybrid design). This could have saved them $ by having an internal DAC for the sequencer, but the chip is more rare. Maybe they just used PWM for sequencer output.
- the microprocessor has a hardware serial input. Most do.
- there was probably left over code space. The sequencer is simple.
- it would have been free to have basic MIDI handling code on that microprocessor. Space is there, code would take a few days max and they probably tried it.
- it would have been annoying to make it fully featured (full range, pitch bend, channel selection, pattern dumping, full clock support, etc..)
- it would have cost $ to actually wire up the optoisolator and MIDI socket, so they left it off.
In summary: maybe if you hooked up a MIDI input circuit to the serial input of the monotribe, basic MIDI support will "just work". It's a big maybe, but crazier things have happened
Re: Korg Monotribe ?
Thought Id put this here rather than the listening lounge simply because it's pretty much all monotribe, except for the moog delay on a couple of sounds, moog ringmod on a background beat and the murf during the swirly stereo lead sound...
All of the sounds were made on the monotribe, and I havent done any real mixing beyond levels, so I thought it might be interesting to someone...

Ok, here is my contribution to a demo subject that is quickly becoming oversubscribed
:
My my two montribes locked together with some heavy active step manipulation going on... this was before I even realized (obviously) you could simply mute synth steps too
