Alesis Micron - Audio Output works as audio Input??

Post by sonofasynth » Mon Jul 25, 2011 11:15 pm

Hi, I recently bought a brand new Alesis Micron, I tried to plug MP3 Player to the Audio In but there's no sound coming from the synth, so I tried Audio Out and it does work - what the h**l?? And the Audio Out also works well as an output when I plug my speakers into it! Is it supposed to do this? Is my Micron faulty? Can someone please explain this to me? Thanks a lot!

Welcome to the board!
Not a Micron owner myself, but found this in the manual:

Connect External Instruments
You can connect external audio sources–other synthesizers,
mixers, guitars, etc.–using the ¼-inch (audio in) jacks on the back
of the Micron. The jacks accept either balanced or unbalanced
cables.
Your external audio can be blended in with the Micron’s internal
sound-producing oscillators. The resulting combination is then
sent through the Micron’s filters and effects. This doesn’t happen
automatically, though. You need to adjust some program
parameters to send external audio into the mix. See page 72 for
more about these filters and effects.
Use both jacks for stereo input. Use the (left) jack for mono-only
sources (in which case the input will be sent to both the left and
right channels).
A special group of programs–including vocoder programs–exists
just for use with the external inputs. These programs begin with
“*” and are accessible at the beginning of the sfx Program
category.

You're plugging into the audio out and hearing it through the headphones? The outputs mustn't be buffered then. You could blow the output stages by hooking up a low impedance load like that, and it won't sound great either. Like rhino said use the input and one of the programs that's designed for it. It's not a mixer input, it runs the audio through the synth's signal path. If you just want to mix things together buy a mixer.

Yeah, as a general rule-- never plug 2 outputs together.. if you were talking more high powered lines you could have done some damage.
