Help?

Hello,
I used to have an old analog monphonic 1 1/2 octave synthesizer. I can't remember the manufaturer. It was a totally fantastic machine. I am looking to buy a synth that I can create sounds like I did with that one. I am looking for a self contained, polyphonic unit and really am lost with what is out there. I am under budget restraints of about $400 usd.
Also, if anyone can help with cheap drum machines it would be appreciated. I really don't know anything about them.

Most vintage analog mono synths were fantastic... Sorry, we'll need a FEW more details!!
Look for something used from Novation: The K-station might be a good starter. Thr SuperNova keyboard is a winner, but may bust your $400 budget.

Rhino - Well, it made I guess you could call it, noise. Along with more typical sounds. I just plugged it in and fooled around with it till I got sounds I liked. I need to be able to create sounds, much preferably without any programming. It needs to be good for live music as well as recording.

I had a '64 Ford that made noise too. We can't help much with that info either:
1) about how big was it?
2) was it flat, or did the panel behing the keys slope?
3) were the controls behind the keys, or in front under the keys?
4) knobs? sliders? both?
5) patch jacks and cords?
6) knobs/sliders all same color or many different colors?
7) any kind of display screen?
8) real keys or button-like pads?
9) was it built into it's own case?

It was about 18" x 12" by maybe 6" high, slight slope, controls (knobs and sliders,) in back of real keys, except for a stick 'pitch' oscillator? on the side, the knobs same color, no display screen, one single unit, it seemed like it was old back in the late 80's when I first got it.
Was looking at some of the Novation stuff, (k-station and something else,) and the microkorg among others but they seem to fit what I'm looking for the best. Any recommendations or criticism on either (or both)?
