Most of the compact mixers I've seen have at most 2 aux sends, usually just one stereo pair. Am I looking for something that doesn't exist, but for only the larger mixers? Budget under 1k.

compact mixer + aux sends
I'm looking for a new mixer (analog) and hoping to save some space. I really only need 8-12 channels tops, so something compact would be perfect. Obviously something reliable and that doesn't sound horrible. Most notably, I really would like something with as many aux sends/returns as possible, as I find this to be the most fun/creative way to use effects rather be limited by using them in a linear way.

Re: compact mixer + aux sends
I don't know of anything analogue with more than 2 aux sends with less than 14 channels. The smaller Mackie 16 channels are a good choice, they sound good and are quite reliable. If you really want to save space and run a heap of aux sends then look at something like a soundcard with a DSP mixer built in. I can use my RME Fireface UFX as a 22 input, 10 aux mixer, and could expand that to 28 auxes if I wanted. Easy to control with a HUI app on my ipad. Maybe look at something similar but cheaper and with less IO, could be a great solution, especially if you're intending to record at all.

I haven't ruled out an interface, but I'm leaning towards keeping the PC out of it. I'm going to read up on it though, as I really don't understand it that well.
With something like the allen and heath zed14: http://www.allen-heath.com/uk/products/ ... ctId=ZED14 which has 4 mono aux sends, but no dedicated returns. I am right in assuming you are obliged to use a separate channel/input for that purpose?

It's got two dedicated stereo returns, one labeled stereo return and one labeled 2-track return. Aux 1+2 are pre-fade as well, not ideal for use with effects.
