HELP : Dead Kurzweil KSP8

Post by synthRodriguez » Sun Aug 31, 2014 5:11 pm

In short: Asking for a recommendation on someone I can send it to for repair.

======

I have a Kurzweil KSP8, purchased new, always racked in the studio.

It refuses to lock to a wordclock, either internal or external. When it's not locked (as-designed, i.e., not operational sonically because it's not locked to a clock), you can navigate through all the menus just fine.

When you select a clock in the setup menu however, it sort-of locks up. It continues to process instructions, but very very slowly, as I expect it's looking for a lock between instructions. It makes a full loop about every 2.5 minutes as opposed to a couple milliseconds in normal operation. Like I said, it does operate "normally" when a clock is not selected in the menu.

I think it must be a dead PLL or something. Thought it was one of the crystals and tried replacing, but no joy.

Kurzweil was kind enough to supply a full set of schematics to me with a "good luck" but neither the factory nor any of their "authorized service centers" will touch it as repair is going to be required at the component level.

I've sucessfully repaired some digital stuff before, but this one's too deep for me and needs someone with digital processor experience. If it wasn't SMD, I'd have a go at replacing a few of the suspects, but...

Anyone have a suggestion for a person or company to whom I might turn?

If I can't find someone to fix it, it's going on eBay for parts. Regardless, no more Kurzweil for me. This is the second time I've been burned, badly.
