Anyone here use one, Do you like it, I noticed there isn't a lot of Info out there on the 85, the SY77 and SY99 there seams to be a loyal following. I got one of EBAY about a month ago, I like the real time change with all of the sliders.

Re: Yamaha SY 85
The SY85 is a straight-up ROMpler workstation (sample based subtractive synth plus sequencer) and in general there's little love for them, at least ones from Yamaha. It's a solid instrument, though.
The SY77 and 99 have FM synthesis as well as sample based so they get more love.

I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Re: Yamaha SY 85
The SY85 is like an early version of the more recent Yamaha "workstations" like the CS6 etc. Yes the 77 and 99 are more interesting because of FM, but the SY85 probably has the same filter (it's good) and (like the 99) can have I think up to 8MB of SIMMS for loading samples. You could use the Cyclone plugin from Sonic Charge as an editor, to make Yamaha format looped samples. It's an emulator of the Yamaha YX16W.

I remember that when the SY85 came out it was a kind of shock to me since it was the first Yamaha synth in years without FM
(I have to admit that I'm totally in love with FM
)

Re: Yamaha SY 85
A lot of people slated the 85 saying it wasn't a real synth. Utter nonsense! I had two of them in the past and totally loved the massive sounds that they produced. It was the only synth that I ever got real big and fat pads from. I sampled every sound from it when I sold the last one, then bought a TG500 caused I missed the synth. The 85 weighed a bloody ton though!

Bought an '85 a few months ago. LOVE it!
Big phat pads - nice bell sounds - lovely bass. OK - it doesn't have FM...but who cares?
