To add some closure to this topic, after being able to test this on another K2500 I was able to confirm that it's not just my unit. In OS version 2.99 the bug doesn't exist, only in 3.02. The latest KDFX OS version is also affected.

I have a K2500 with SMCTLV7 and latest KDFX OS and objects installed. So far it does NOT show this behaviour. With the Space Station patch it may depend a bit on how you play it. But with this patch you should always hear the clicks, as they no longer depend on note velocity and other factors.
