Has anyone repaired keys on a CASIO CZ-3000 or 5000?

Post by abrokenframe » Fri Sep 29, 2006 9:48 am

I just picked one up at the goodwill for quite cheap, but two of the keys have snapped in the back(seems to be a common problem with them). I took it apart and can see where both keys broke and have found the snapped off piece of one inside the synth, but I don't see an easy way to glue it on or take the key out. Has anyone fixed these keys themselves to where they can give me some info? I couldn't find any info on fixing a key on the cz series except in a review where he said he fixed it in ten minutes, which seems hard to believe.

Thanks for any help!

I worked on the CZ-3000 + CZ 5000 for other kind of problems. An assistant of mine did the key replacement.

If memory serves, he had to take apart the chassis to take out the broken keys. But don't quote me on this.

To level the keys, sometimes all that is needed is a new spring.

As for glueing the pieces, sometimes it works cometimes it doesn't. Depends on how it's broken and what type of glue you're using. Cement glue is recommended.

Well I took the whole keyboard apart, but then it seems there is this plastic strip glued right below the back of the keys to keep them in place. I think I may have to remove it to slide the keys out to get to the broken ones and then glue the plastic strip back into place, but I didn't want to start removing parts that I didn't have to if there was an easier way.

I would also just buy new keys if I could find them so that way I don't have to rely on glue.

I just got a Poly 800 for $30 and it had two broken keys. I'm using a product called plastic welder...I got it at Wal-Mart. It looks like it's going to work great. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Also about the plastic strip I'm assuming that's the only way to get the keys out. My JX-8P has the same thing to prevent the keys from being pulled out.

But that stuff I got is rated for 3,500 psi. I'm assuming the plastic will break before the glue will...many epoxies are that way.

All the casio cz series keys are the same, except for the cz-101 which are mini keys. In fact many early casio keyboard keys will fit right into place of your cz series keyboard. You do have to take it apart and remove the plastic strip which acts as a lock. Once you remove the plastic strip the keys slide right out. Lots of screws to take apart, but if you have patience you should be okay.

Awesome! thanks guys. I will look into taking some keys off of some cheaper casios and just swithcing them out and if not use that glue. Yea, there's tons of screws! I took the whole thing apart and removed the keyboard from the frame and stopped at the plastic strip because I wasn't sure how hard it would be to put it back. I will just use a razor. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks guys

Okay I've got it all glued up and it works perfectly, and I doubt it will break againg.

I broke a similar piece of plastic and glued it back together again to see how it would stand up to another breaking. It broke in a completely different spot, which suggests the glue is extremely strong.
