uhh I was kinda re-installing the sysx for my ION to see if maybe that'd get rid of the annoying high end squeal.
This was reinforced by the fact that the squal wasn't present in the OS view mode.
so I used Midi Ox to upgrade to 1.06
But the OS upgrade stops part way.
the best it got was 77%
So does anyone have any ideas?

Sure. Another member (Jabberwalky) had a similar problem and used another SysEx uploader. See all the details here:

if you are having problems with sysex and midiox, there is an easy fix.
If go to view/sysex it will open the sysex view, then open sysex/configure and change the output buffer settings to something higher. Read the help portion regarding buffers, it should be very helpful.
the problem is not really with midi-ox, it's more with midi interfaces these days. I had all sorts of problems with my old midi-sport 2x2 when trying to do large midi dumps on certain machines and that helped (i did dump it for a midex 8 and that fixed all my problems)

thanks I've been fiddling with buffers for a couple hours now.
my midi interface is an Edirol UM-2.
I might try crawling under my desk to getto the protools rack
and see how that goes.
Cheers

unfortunately I had to usehttp://www.bome.com/midi/sendsx/with a speed setting of 1/1.3 which is one notch left of center.
I did have to switch to my Digidesign 002 rack though(which is usually incompatible with everything!).[/url]

Everyone has had problems updating the Ion/Micron OS at some point. I was acting smug and was going to update the Ion a guy came into the synth store with (he claimed the parameters edited themselves). I don't work there, just hang there alot, so I suggested to update the OS instead of returning it.
Well..First try went bad. Second and third aswell..started feeling quite hot as I stood there..on the 4th try it worked fine. You just have to fiddle with the Delay (ms) option in whatever MIDI program you use. It seems to be individual from computer to computer what works best. 50-300ms.
Try increasing in 50ms intervals.
I've updated my Ion several times since I got it, and always got it right eventually. I've used both MIDI-Ox and Bomes SendSX.
It's not broken, it just has a broken OS but that can still be updated. You can try as many times you want. Just know that hope is not lost, it WILL work eventually once you hit that sweet value.
Wish Alesis used the system from the Andromeda, where you upload the OS into a Flash ROM chip, and THEN load it over to the synth after saying YES to a question on the LCD. So there is no chance a broken MIDI connection would ruin the synth.

Last time I did it I think I used CubaseSX but its not installed anymore. I couldn't get Protools to accept the SysEx file for some reason, despite having done it with my AN1X a few times.
At least its all sorted and back in order, just that sqeal is so damn annoying through the headphone socket.
Any chance it could be a dodgy connection?
I read that the socket/plugs from board to board can fall off?

Don't bother with the huge midi sequencers, too much hassle for a simple thing. Use MIDI-Ox or Bome's SendSX (the most stable one I've used). If it fails, try changing the Send Delay time a bit, and try again. It COULD be a dodgy MIDI cable, but most likely it's just software-wise. As I said, I had to try 4 times with a customer's synth and wasn't feeling very well, but it did work eventually so I didn't look like a complete fool
I've heard reports about certain MIDI interfaces not working well with the Ion/Micron. But a MIDI IN/OUT on a computer soundcard should be no problem..I remember sweating and staring at that counter as it crept upwards to 100%..it usually failed around 90%.
The Ion's MIDI input isn't very fast, so if you send data packets too quickly it starts missing them and you get a broken OS. Just keep on trying, it will work eventually. I never tried the sequencer way, AFAIK the sequencer only takes MIDI file, not .sysex file.

I was surprised how slow the damn ion was actually, I'm happy its working now
I went through and initialised all the patches I didn't like as soon as I'd got it back on track.
Anyway enough internet I need breakfast.
