Sounds like a 909 to me, you could either get a 909 (expensive) an X-Base 09 (expensive) or any sampling drum machine that has 909 samples (cheaper).

You can download samples here: http://www.akaipro.com/arc_kotw.html in .wav format and have a play around with them on your computer if you want.

Ahh legend, how do you think the drums were put together for that track?

Sampler? Having a large knowledge of the band, I doubt they would own a 909.

Whats a cheap sampling drum machine? I can have a cheap 909 or 707 :D

Thanks man, your a great help here

Whats a good free audio program that can do loops and s**t like acid? So like a virtual sampler.

I use Impulse and Simpler that come with Ableton Live, they work fine, sound fine, and integrate with Live really well. You can download the demo and play with it but it doesn't save or export. http://www.ableton.com/download

There's this drum machine for OSX that's pretty cheap: http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/idrum/demo.asp

As far as cheap drum machines go, the SR-16 is pretty decent and you should be able to find one for under $200. I had one a while ago and it was pretty fun to play with. I think it has 909 type sounds but I can't really remember at the moment. You could also check out some of the cheap zoom ones, I don't know what they sound like but they're pretty cheap and I've heard they're decent. Software or something that you can load your own samples into like an MPC is the most flexible way to go really though.

If you really want to do it on the cheap you could always download the demo of Live, which has quite a few samples in it, and a few other drum samples like the akai ones and whatever else is around, then make your drum tracks in the Live demo and record them out to MD or tape deck. Kinda ghetto, but it'll work.

Korg ES-1. Great little box and you should be able to find one for less than $200

Noavtion DrumStation, this little thing gets too little attention around here. Nice 909/808 hardware almost analogue emulation.
