I'm looking for FREE or nearly free software that functions as a VSTi host and sequencer and that can play WAVE files in sync with the VSTi's. And it has to be runnable on Windows 98 SE. I need to be able to record the output of the VSTi's while listening to the WAVE tracks.
I used to have Cubasis VST which could do it, but I'm having a hard time finding a vendor who can ship to the United States. Amazon.co.uk won't let me do it for some dumb reason.
If you just think I should upgrade my computer, please don't respond. I'm not interested in doing that.
So what are my options?
Which VSTi host sequencer for Windows 98 SE ?

Try here: http://www.kvraudio.com/ You'll find all kinds of stuff there that could fit the bill.
Good luck! Post back when you find one you like, OK?

Yes, you can get the last free version of Reaper here: http://www.cockos.com/reaper/download-old-0x.php It's quite nice, powerful, and will work OK on most Win98 systems, provided you have enough memory.
Again, I can't recommend KVR enough for finding out more info, not just about Reaper, but also any other systems you may find.

Get your hands on an old copy of Computer Music magazine (or get the cover disk from someone). Computer Muzys (a slightly cut-down version of Muzys) came free with the mag for many years and it is an excellent host on any platform -- it requires no installation and no registry entries. You can run it straight from the exe. I found it to be a very user-friendly vst host, though it is a bit fiddly playing wav files (you have to play them as samples in the sampler). HIghly recommended.

I downloaded and installed REAPER. It's list of features seems nice. However, I got swamped with setting it up when I got into its Preferences/Settings control panel. THERE ARE WAY TOO MANY SETTINGS ON THIS PROGRAM
Also, the demo song of .OGG files wouldn't play at all.
To anybody out there who wants to use this program: Watch out this program seems way to complex.

Want a simple sequencer (no audio recorder)? Try Tuna Fish - it's my favorite. See it here: http://www.brambos.com/ It isn't free, but it's well worth it, in my opinion.

From ReNoise.com: The free version of Renoise is fully functional, only "render to wav" and ASIO support are disabled.polardark wrote:Renoise up to version 1.5 (1.8 still isn't released) runs well on Windows 98 SE. I use it with my OASYS PCI card, which needs Windows 9x to function.
Renoise runs on:
Windows 95-98-Me-2000-XP
Mac OS X (PPC and INTEL) 10.3.9 or higher
That's really too bad they disabled the two most important features.
It looks like a good program, but also very complex. Also, I'm not sure if it could load up one huge WAVE file to jam
along with using VST instruments. Even if it could, without 'render to WAV' it's pointless.
