Money is really tight, so I'm wondering if any of you folks know if I could get by running the latest version of Cubase SE (with an M Audio usb pre amp) on this set up or if i really need at least OSX 4 (plus). I've got my eye on a couple of copies of it on ebay, but I'm guessing thery're not going to be cheap. Any advice, as always, greatly appreciated.

I have a G4 running 10.3.5. I intend to max out the memory from 640 MB to 1 GB.

You'll be fine once you max the RAM and update your machine to 10.3.9 (free download from Apple).

I run a mac with 10.3.9, which i updated from 10.3.something for nowt via apple's download page. I also run cubase SE with no complaints at all. But you will need to slip a bit of ram in to max performance, mine struggled doing audio with the basic allocation. I put another 512 in (so it's 768 now) and I have no problems doing audio, midi, whatever. Official apple ram was about 30 or 40 quid at the time, i think.

Memory came from the KRCS apple shop in Hull when I was over there one day, they have a few branches around, website here.
Slotting the memory in was a piece of cake. Maybe a slightly dry cake, but cake nonetheless. You can get the folks in the shop to do it for you for no charge, but all you really need is ten minutes, a deep breath and a tiny screwdriver.
My old iBook only came with 256 so start with, so the extra 512 helped. The amount you'll be able to slot into yours depends on what model it is, and what kind of memory it takes, and whether that kind of memory is still available. Check with apple to find out. I think there's a help menu on the apple site, or a faq or something.
