MC202 woes

Post by Shleed » Sat Nov 11, 2006 7:19 pm

Last week I've bought an MC202 from a mate of mine, It had a few scratches so I got it cheap (€100)
It was working fine until I turned it on about an hour ago... the VCO doesn't seem to be working at all. I tried everything to get it working, calibrating, switching on/off the 202 and even resetted it a few times, still no luck... only sound I can still play is the resonance modulated by either the LFO or keyboard slider :/

Are you sure it's not just a slightly dodgy switch position or a rough pot? I presume you've tried flicking all the switches and wiggling all the controls.

I'm not a service tech, but I'd be surprised if the VCO has spontaneously died. On the other hand, if it has, it's a curtis chip and you should still be able to find one somewhere, for a price.

MC-202s use curtis chips? Anyway, I would imagine an OS reload might do the trick. Other than that I wouldn't have the foggiest idea what might be causing the trouble.

try triggering it via CV. That should tell you if its a problem on the analog or digital part

MC-202? OS reload??? Maybe that the CEM3340. Have you checked the sliders, the voltage in/out? The solder joints?

Whoops, I was thinking that this thing was more around the lines of the MC-303.

I have seen a couple MC-202s with failed CEM3340s before so that would be my guess if your filter works but the VCO doesn't...

Exactly. Looked through a few offers on ebay, I might order one... only if I find someone that can replace the chip as I've nearly no experience in soldering.

Right I've ordered the chip, hopefully it'll be here in a few weeks. Cheers for the help :)
