Memorymoon?

Post by nofretz » Mon Feb 05, 2007 8:17 pm

That IS spelled correctly.

www.memorymoon.com

Has anyone tried this?

I would love to hear from someone who has tried the hardware and this vst to see if it's worth trying. I downloaded the demo and it sounded pretty cool to me, but i've never tried the hardware synth. They are so rare and expensive--not to mention unrealiability factor.

I notice that the page title on the browser comes up Minimogue_VA. By the same folks?

I've never tried the original Memorymoog but Bluesynths.com has some sound demos:

http://www.bluesynths.com/modules.php?n ... tent&id=12

You may have to go back to the home page to login.

Just in browsing the presets to me the Memorymoon sounds pretty good. But then again I'm not sure I heard anything different than I've heard from MinimoogV.

Looks impressive. No idea what it sounds like, though. Nor have I used a Memorymoog, but from what I've read, it's THE biggest sounding, ballsiest analog synth ever made. And the most buggy one.

I doubt the VST can recreate that massive weight of sound. It most likely sounds like any VA with a couple of oscillators.

I have a real one. I guess the operating word here is it can be buggy but not necessarily. Mine is more or less okay. With a load of money you can get a Lintronics overhaul and really have something unmatched. You definitely don't want to buy one untested. All units are by no means equal. Key strengths are 3 VCOs per voice (unlike most newer more stable units) and 2 hardware ADSRs per voice. You can of course turn down the output of some VCOs. I actually find it overpowers a lot of other synths if you just start playing it. It's slightly detuned and drifty sound which increases it's "biggness" doesn't help if you quickly start adding all sorts of synths rather than carefully add and adjust patches. The real thing does really understand how real overdrive adds great qualities to the sound. Oh, and it can go into mono 18 VCO mode.

I'm interested in this one. I wonder how much it could compare to a real Memorymoog. They seem to have put lots of work into it, not just stringed together 18 oscillators and a filter and some EG's and painted a nice MM skin in Photoshop.
It says "made with synth-edit", but that doesn't have to be a bad thing if they put a good amount of work into it. The samples are nice.

I like minimogueVA too, specially the Arppe2600va..this one supposed to be very good then, looks good and very interesting..the demos sounds a bit on the softy side (except the unisonbass which is sound huge), but do have a very nice tone..specially listened with a higher volume..even kinda like the tone better than the newer Moogs.

I just downloaded the demo of v1.0 (v1.1 is on the move and will be much improved according to the creator).
The oscillators are specially made for this synth, not the "generic synthedit sound". In synthedit you can do so much more than just drag and drop pre-made modules. You can go down to the very basics almost.

It has some really nice presets that make you sit back and go "wow". And if it doesnt necessarily mimic the MM sound 100%, at least the panel is laid out in the same way, so you get to play with how the real memorymoog works. Pressing all those buttons. It has 2 filters too, a 64bit filter and a Moog filter.
You also have an extra "soundfont" oscillator that you can load external .sf2 files into and mix into the other 3 oscillators.
So find soundfonts of the Memorymoog and you're set, but only for 1 oscillator :P
Can also load wav/loops into this 4th oscillator.

Regarding the oscillators and the mixer, they've modelled the real MM's overdrive very well. The Memorymoog manual states that any level above 5 (5V) will create overdrive. And it does here too.
On the sawtooth, the timbre will get more unstable and you hear periodic "gnawing" (don't know a better word for it). The pulse will clip periodically.
And on the triangle wave, the more you push towards 10, the more it turns into a sine wave. Just like the real manual says it should, because you're esentially flattening the sharp tops and bottoms of the triangle so it resembles a sine wave.

You have a great modulation section that is copied from the memorymoog, seems Moog looked at Prophet-5, because the "Voice modulation" section is almost the same as P-5's polymod. You can use Oscillator 3 to "LFO" modulate lots of parameters like filter cutoff, each of the other oscillators, PWM.
Having VCO2 in sync'd mode, and modulating it with VCO3's frequency in audio range, you get a seriously fat growl effect.
The normal LFO modulation has many LFO shapes+S&H and can modulate Osc1,2,3 pitch, PWM1,2,3 and/or filter cutoff. VCO3 has a Low frequency mode (like minimoog), so you actually have 2 separate LFO's to use.

You also have good control of the "voice card detune" feature, with several knobs, plus you can choose what parts of the synth you wanna be unstable: The VCO, VCF and VCA.
It's not just a S&H modulation of the pitch or anything, the subtle change is only heard when you restrike a key, just like on real analogs.

Another neat feature is you can press a button to see envelopes graphically. There is also inbuilt delay, distortion and reverb, all with several knobs to control them. Also a chorus/phaser in this section with variable speed, resonance and depth.
I like. And an arpeggiator where you can actually map out certain steps in the pattern to create interesting rythmic patterns. Great stuff.

The "Moog" filter aliases very quickly on high resonance sweeps, though, particularly with all oscillators turned off. I didn't notice the aliasing at all when the oscillators were in the mix aswell, though. The aliasing happened only when I swept the filter cutoff with envelope on max eg amount on max resonance.
I never noticed it when oscillators are mixed in, so in normal operation you won't hear anything unusual. I pushed it over the limit on purpose there.

There is no huge limitation on the demo, other than a periodic 1 second silence. I much prefer this kind of limitation above others, like the OP-X closing down the entire program every 30 seconds. It's better than a periodic noise burst too, because you don't blow your speakers when the "TSSSSSSSSSHHHHT" sound suddenly appears.

I'd give it a 9/10 instantly (I've been playing with and exploring it for several hours now+reading the original Memorymoog manual)

wow, Bitexion!

i don't know how i missed this review because i was subscribed to the topic. thanks a million. i just might DL the full version. one problem...on the demo, i couldn't get a full screen or any scroll bars. so i couldn't access the left side of the panel :( do you think this will change on the full version, or do i have an internal problem?
