it needs to store at least 4 samples at min of 20 seconds
a built in sequencer as well unless it has midi in and outs...
good editing is a plus

If you are lucky... you can get a Roland SP-303.

You can get a ENSONIQ sampler pretty cheap. You can get a Mirage if fully operational for pocket change. I had that 8 bit sampler for years. I had the one with steel casing not the plastic one. The first rev of its' kind. It died after years of use. EPS sells really cheap too. Not a full 20 second on either one, but you can power use the h**l out of them. Akai has some really cheap ones too and it can vary on sample times. Some of the Akai you'll be lucky to find the 2.8" disk disc to save your samples on. EMU III or Emax can be at grasp end. Not too many people want to give them up. Next would be KURZWEIL K2000 and up. To find one is going to be as hard as the EMU. To find ram for them... Well you are better off one finding your virginity. It uses the old Apple ram 32 pin. If you do find ram for it. Prepare to pay out the nose for it. I know Korg came out with a sampler, but I cannot think of the top of my head what model it was. The same sampler with Roland. I recall on seeing on with the 2.8 disc drive.
I do not know why you need 20 second sample time for. My opinion on the that matter. If I need some thing that long, I use the computer and place it as needed. Most people like to sample and sync it up with a simple 4/4 time. The above to cheap to I hope I can get it for??

THat's a good call. You can find them for dirt these days and they are great for the money.

it's possible, but you need a computer to do it. if the original poster is seeking a tabletop sampler, i'm guessing he/she wants it for live use, which oftentimes means, "I don't want to gig with a laptop." in case i'm wrong, here are 2 programs that play an ES-1 like a monophonic synth:

(1) go to www.bome.com and download the demo version of MIDI TRANSLATOR CLASSIC. to unlock the full version costs us$39 or you can unlock it free if you send a postcard to the person who created the software (allow 4 to 10 weeks to get your unlock key via e-mail, though). i used this program when i had an es-1 and it worked great.

(2) join the ELECTRIBES yahoo group. in the FILES section, download "ES-1 as piano" (i don't think it's mac-compatible), then go download MIDI OX. i haven't tried this (i sold my es-1 and got an esx-1 instead), so i don't know how well it works.

to the original poster, if you just want to play 20-second audio clips and perform over them, i think the sp-303 is your best bet.

if you tell us more about how you plan to use this sampler, we might be able to help you more.

a boss 303 would be great for this. You should be able to get one on ebay easily for under $200. I got one a bit over a year ago for around $160 shipped. Just make sure to buy one that comes with a memory card because you will want one and smart media cards are expensive and hard to find on their own.

Why not a Korg ES-1?

If you look on eBay they can be found for 150-200 most of the time

EA-1 & ER-1 - It's a start for a poor college kid :o
Reason / ReBirth too but I like hardware better.

the s20 has a rudimentray sequencer. basically hit play and it will record button presses on the unit in a 'similar' way to how you actually hit them. not supr tight.

it does however have wonderful midi control.

probably yer best bet unless these new-fangled groove box style machines are really legit.

They go for closer to $300 these days since madlib and some other fools use them.
