So I speculate, based on the serial number range Ive seen, that if Fizzie kbs were only manufactured over a 4 month period in late 1998, I bet less than a thousand were cranked out. And only 50 racks sounds awfully low to me.

sounds to me like the whole "Phys-MO"concept was victimized by a company undergoing severe upheaval, more of an afterthought by "creative" minds more focused on the future rather than the past. I mean, when U market it for only what six months, I dont see a lot of dedication to product.

that technology had been there for a long time in the waldorf microwaves and ppg waves, and other ensoniq products, i think. are there any features implemented at the time that were actually "new" to the fizmo? other than the graphics?
i think ensoniq might have known they were on their way out at the time.
i remember trying the fiz out in the store and laughing at it. in comparison with the other synths on the floor, there wasnt much for the average synth customer to like. the techno kit - which would have been the main draw for MOST synth buyers at the time - was incredibly lame in comparison to everything else. regardless, i realized its potential and when they blew them out i bought one of the keyboards. when i got an opportunity to buy a rack, i ditched the keyboard with the quickness.

i'm currently surveying the posts to the Yahoo Fiz group (a good source of primary materials for all U historians out there) and will post the highlights soon. I like timelines
One thing i did notice tho: estimates for rack production range from 6
to 100 to 500. All over the map here.

theres definitely more than 6 cause ive got 2. but i think the 100 figure is accurate. or at least thats what i heard.

someone, I dunno who, wrote an entry for Fizzy in Wiki, where they claim that an "estimated" 500 kbs and 100 racks were produced:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ensoniq_Fizmo
of course we know just how accurate
Wiki can be, but hey it's a start. I also love how they justify "cult" status haha.

Ensoniq was planning a new physical modelling synth and they wanted to call it FIZMO, but as they had to sell a new synth earlier, they made it with what was available then - Transwaves.minime123 wrote:"kind of" forward thinking minds...

I think the newness of FIZMO lies in its host of Transwaves.

That, and how F's marvelous effects processor integrates with the transwaves so seamlessly and so nicely. when U get a delay going with certain transwaves--and work in possible modulations--it's simply magicSealed wrote:I think the newness of FIZMO lies in its host of Transwaves.

Adding a resonant filter to a Transwave synth was new for Ensoniq...

My serial # is 9 digits long and I don't see a date on my Fiz rack. (This is printed on the bottom)
