anyone ever split an A-frame stand into a corner?

Post by space6oy » Mon Dec 08, 2008 12:14 am

about the last thing i want to do right now is dissemble my A-frame stand AGAIN since i just did that yesterday to squeeze a fourth tier in, but i was planning to buy another and had this funny thought about taking the rear support legs off the A-frame and using them w/ additional tiers to make it stand straight up with an L base. wondering how stable that'd be though, and it'd really only fit in a room's corner...

anyone ever tried a stunt like that?

i'm having trouble visualizing this. i've got QuikLok and OnStage A-frames, but about the the most unconventional thing i've done with them is remove the rear cross-beam in order to fit an X-stand underneath. your description has me intrigued though, and i'd like to hear more about this L-base corner idea.

i know it'd stand up fine on its own, just wondering how stable it'd be once it's holding a bunch of gear.

wait, that'd be pretty cool, if it would stand up. the more i think about it, the less stable it seems however, considering the already somewhat light and wobbly design of most A-frames. a decent sized bump, push, or pull would likely send one of the legs skittering out, torquing the joints just enough to let everything squirm and crash apart. anchoring the vertical posts to the wall, at least at the top and bottom would probably be sufficient enough to make it nice and stable.

one of my stands is broken down right now, so if i get a chance, i'll set it up this way just for fun and see what happens (if someone doesn't beat me to it, that is).

thanks for posting the pic!

Keep an eye on this one. The outside verticals may have a tendency to pitch forward/backward. The simplest structural model I can think of is a notebook after you open it and stand it up on a table.

Don't forget, there will be about a square foot of unusable space in the corner.

yeah, it'd obviously have to have a decent angle at that center vertical post for it to not fall forward, and things would have to be slid to the outer edges to make up for that center space. probably no big deal.

i haven't convinced myself it's worth trying yet... both because dissembling & reassembling back to where mine already is would be one disappointing pain in the a*s (yes, lazy, guilty...) but also i'd have to rearrange my whole room so it'd have a corner instead of a wall. but it IS tempting... would just bring everything closer for me if it'd work out.

What about taking the supports that used to be in the rear and swapping them around to the front on the outside ends? That would help with the tendency to pitch forward provided you could attach them in some manner where you didnt have to lean the ends inwards, (which isn't possible in the L configuration anyway.)

the support legs & their crossbar are what i'd be using for that 2nd wall!

Not exactly what space6oy is wanting to do, but I'm making some modifications to some A frame stands. Since I am downsizing my space for my furniture shop (where I keep some of my synth collection), I am making room to bring them home. I've taken 3 USS Apache stands and made 2 "super stands". The super stand on the left will hold my monos (8 keyboard monos on the left: 2 per tier and my modular, semi-modular stuff on the right). The right side super stand will hold the polys (pre-MIDI on left, MIDI'd on right). Please excuse the mess, it's a work in progress:

that's awesome.
kind of the combination i'm talking about, since the pairs are sharing the set of legs in the center. i'm just shorter on stands and am thinking about scrapping the support legs and having it stand as a corner :D

it'd be great if it works out... i'm gonna give it a shot eventually, dammit!

It bears noting that there is a reason why the craftsmen of a century and more ago made stools with three legs. The fact is that while four point support can get wobbly if one leg is just a bit out of spec, the worst that can happen with three point support is that one out of spec leg would just make your rack not quite level.

Mind you, it also depends on how firmly you attach the parts together but the idea is quite sound on the merits. Also, your center of mass should be inside the support triangle so no, you do not need a corner for it to stand up.
Current gear:

Korg X5 (basically an ROMpler)
Casio VZ 10M (rack mount 80's style synth-- think DX7 on steroids)
Roland A 37 (6+ octave controller for the Casio rack unit above)
Roland JP 8000 (well enough known analog modeling digital synth)
