When you got your first sampler (whether hardware or software), what was the first thing you sampled? Mine was a piece of crystal being struck with a fork.
Switches, knobs, buttons, LEDs, LCD screens, monitors, keys, mice, jacks, sockets. Now two joysticks!

Re: The first thing you sampled
Never owned a hardware sampler, its on the list though
With only having a software sampler i never really used it that much other than the stock samples that came with logic.
However, a friend asked me to do the soundtrack to a horror/comedy film we made, and i thought, i really fancy using my imagination on this, and that's when i got into sampling creatively
So the first thing i sampled was me whacking a radiator with a belt (metal buckle on impact). This gave an awesome sound to use for the sudden revealing of the... erm... killer trilby

Re: The first thing you sampled
My first venture into sampling was a boss DSD-2 pedal. First up I sampled an 808 style 'boooom' kick drum from the SH-2 to make my Dr.110 sexier.
I've since realized that sampling is serious business, so I've upgraded to a Casio SK-1 8)

Re: The first thing you sampled
Rather arrogantly, I thought I could sample myself going "AAHHHHHHHH" and loop it to sound like Peter Gabriel's trademark vocal samples on Security and So.
I was very quick to find out it's harder than it seems, especially if one can't hold a note's pitch or amplitude very well.

The sampler was an Akai S950. The year was 1990. The first three things I sampled were a female friend of a friend doing some "aah"s and "ooh"s, me playing a cor anglais, and water-tuned edge-rubbed wine glasses.
I'm not counting things I sampled with a Macintosh years earlier.
cheers,
Ian

My voice
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

When I was younger I would generate sine waves and combine them with the sounds of my then parakeets in Sound Edit 16. This was shortly followed by sounds of beating the living h**l out of metal oil drums with a hammer and copper rod.

If the answer is not burping or farting you don't have a sense of humor.

We wanted to get some breaking glass samples into the ol' fairlight, so we took a tape recorder and a mic down to a car junk yard, and recorded me smashing various car windows and tvs with a sledgehammer.. Bloody good fun.
oh, wait...

aside from the sk-1 burp - 19 radios configured in a circle with a microphone going through about 7 pedals in the middle of the circle, which was then blended with the Friday the 13th video game theme.

That one TV gave you a h**l of a difficult time, didn't it?Sir Ruff wrote:We wanted to get some breaking glass samples into the ol' fairlight, so we took a tape recorder and a mic down to a car junk yard, and recorded me smashing various car windows and tvs with a sledgehammer.. Bloody good fun.
"Sure that's fine in practice, but what about in theory?"

Was the game volume controlled by hand, or with a remote?tallowwaters wrote:aside from the sk-1 burp - 19 radios configured in a circle with a microphone going through about 7 pedals in the middle of the circle, which was then blended with the Friday the 13th video game theme.
