Can you use the DX200 as a midi contoller for the fs1r? ?
And ...how do I get a Kenton control freak to interface easily with the fs1r? I'm reasonably dumb when it comes to midi and computers. Is there a downloadable programme, as with the mackie, to link them? And how do I do this?
I wish I was better at this stuff. I guess that's why I like old gear - its easier

No.

Doubtful. Creating a template for the FS1R is a huge undertaking. It's not likely Kenton has any interest in it. The bloke who created the Mackie C4 Pro template did so after receiving requests from myself and others willing to pay for one.

You could always make your own template for the Kenton. Here's the MIDI Sysex data list: http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/emi ... FS1RE2.PDF

Thanks again! Just printed that out. If there's any synth worthy of more attention its the fs1r. I feel guilty I don't manage to find more time for programing it. :D

No.

Not entirely true. All knobs on the DX200 send midi cc's and the FS1r can receive them. See pg.74 of the FS1r manual about "RcvKnobCtrl" which basically allows "remote control" of the four knobs on the front of the FS which in turn can be assigned to various parameters. Then theres "knob sequences" on the DX200 which are knob changes that can be recorded and "played" back.
Big fun!

The same could be said of any hardware or software sequencer in combination with the knobs on the FS1R or knob laden MIDI controller. There's certainly nothing specific about the DX200 which makes it more suited to the task. By no means a good reason to buy a DX200 if you've got an FS1R.

Thanks everybody for all the useful informations!

Anyway, please could someone check if his own FS1R behaves like mine? I mean, if you enter the voice banks hitting the Part +/- buttons every individual voices of any banks has the same dsp/effects of the original Performance, i.e. even scrolling down through 1500 individual voices they all have the same dsp/effects applied...

I'm asking this because I'm beginning to think that there's a bug in my FS1R that need to be fixed...if someone could do the test for me I will really appreciate that!!

Thanks again!

Marco

That's normal for the FS1r - all Voices exist within the context of a Performance.

If you want to audition Voices such that they are "plain" or without the effects (figuratively and literally) of a Performance, then set up a "vanilla" Performance that has basic MIDI control, effects routing set but 0% mix, and other normative settings. Save it and use it when auditioning Voices, as well as when you want to build your own Performances from scratch.

cheers,
Ian

Thank you Ian!

Again, this is not a "logic" things for me but ok, I'll live with that  ...

Anyone using the FSeqEdit software in order to edit, convert and store FSeq?:

Ciao!!

Just a quick note - I was playing around with the fs1r and noticed that turning the dedicated 'formant' knob while in a vocal patch yields some particularly rewarding real time changes. Sort of like singing and altering your mouth shape to mould the sound. Though this is very 'high tech' ; using formants sounds very natural to the human ear - T :) hey are also big in Indian classical vocal music. I wish there was a synth that could sound like a great Indian vocalist - ah maybe in the 2110s.....

yes
No, it doesn’t, by any proper definition.

It intercepts poly AT messages, ignores their note numbers, and takes the highest current poly AT value and translates it into channel aftertouch that is applied to all individual notes.

So it only offers channel aftertouch

The above 'translation' of poly AT basically allows an actual poly AT keybed to control the FS1R as though it were channel AT. It might be useful on an abstract level in that regard, but it’s not polyphonic AT at all.

DX1 is the only Yamaha FM synth that supports poly AT in the sense of allowing individual control over single notes/keys being played. Well, actually, according to its manual, the PLG150DX _sort of_ can, but it only seems to offer LFO modulation depth and overall note level as destinations, not proper parameters like EG bias/modulator level, which to me would be the only real benefit of poly AT - and still not worth £6000... ;)

Correct - I got all excited about the poly AT response, until I looked into what it actually did.

Still an amazing machine!
