New Mac Pro Feedback

Post by gekichan » Wed Sep 29, 2010 9:14 pm

Hi there,

do anybody have some news or better some feedback about the new Ma Pro 6-core Xeon Processor using the most common DAW like Logic or Ableton Live?

Thanks in advice,
Best,

g.

Is there any reason you need the expansion ports of the Mac Pro? If you're not using the PCIe slots and you don't simply have money to burn then an imac is much better value for money. Up until a couple of days ago I was using a Core 2 Duo imac in my studio and never had any problems with running out of power even running big sessions. Using Pro Tools LE, Live 8 and occasionally Logic 8.

Considering you can get an i5 imac for about half the price of a 6 core Mac Pro I'd consider that, it leaves you with a lot of spare cash which you can spend on whatever you want.

Half the price, for half the speed.

But when you only need half the speed it doesn't matter. I've done sessions with 48 tracks, McDSP EQs and Compressors, convolution reverbs and didn't run out of power on a Core 2 Duo which is about half the speed of an i5. No point having all that speed if you aren't using it.

So, depends on what you're doing. IF you can run your existing system out of CPU, then tell us, and tell us what you have...

I have the previous generation 8-core MP, there's a lot to be said for a system where you never have to think about power or latency. I can ramp up the number of plugins and instances to anything and the machine never notices. Nothing worse than bottlenecks.
