Nothing like being fashionably late to the party :)

Digital: D-50 or JD-800 depending on your mood/taste
Analog: Jupiter 8

In my current gear: JX-3P  (in some ways a nicely limited cross of sorts between a D-50 and a Jupiter 8 sound.. if you squint your ears in just the right way, and add some outboard effects) :D 8-)

OVERALL: JD-800 - BEST ROLAND EVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o (and that's not about the synthesis or the sound - but the whole package - the only thing better than this would be a Jupiter 6/8 and even then more 'different' than better - and in some ways not as powerful, obviously)

Had many, loved the jupiter 8, though it was way too limited for my likes.
Only roland I have is a v-synth xt, will probably stay that way unless I find any system parts for a good price, or a sh3a, never tried one, however something about it has always interested me.

I actually really like the SC-7. Sounds great of if you filter out the ear piercing high end.. great of mallet sounds ala Luke Vibert or something.
Stab Frenzy wrote:The SH-7 is the best looking in my opinion, followed by the System 700.
I think it's the best sounding too.

Had a SH-7 and RS-505 combo for awhile.
Best Roland experience I've had.

I'd say the Jupiter 6 is the greatest. Just not a great "performance synth" at all really ... more of a studio synth. Would love to have one with the keyboard hacked off..

honorable mention to the MC-202/SH-101.
Not the best for arranging a song.. but one good sequence on one or your song might be written already.. just add reverb.

Digital: D-50...[/b]
I'm curious... why pick the D-50 over the V-Synth?

don't get me wrong, the D-50 is one of my very favorite synths, but the V-Synth is a D-50, and a better version of it, plus it's also a V-Synth.

anyway, my pick obviously goes to the V-Synth. For my taste it is almost as if Roland made it just to make me happy. Aside from the lack of anything analog, the V-Synth is truly the culmination of decades of synthesis evolution and as for Roland it is a veritable "best of" and a near seamless coming together collection of ideas that created an amazing instrument. Analog Modeling + VariPhrase sampling + COSM processing and an array of hands-on control features = win.

as for vintage analog Roland, the System 100. easy choice.

Roland best synth is Juno 106, It's understood for everyone who are not deaf! I tell you this as an ex owner of two JP-8 and present owner of Juno 60 and other Roland stuff.

PS: maybe system 100 with all modules is nice too.

Roland's greatest synth eh? I'm going to say a Roland SH 1000. Why? It was the first Japanese commercial synth ever available and paved the way for all the other Roland synths to follow. It may not have all the complexities of the later ones, but it was the first.

Well I've played a Jupiter 8 (recently!!) and own a D-50, I tend to talk only of synths I've had hands on time with otherwise it's guesswork at best :) You may have a point about V-synth being better all round/far more flexible than a lowly D-50 - but in terms of greatest synth, impact, history etc? D-50 is the daddy (probably still their best selling synth no?).

Having said this, I would take JD-800 over any other Roland digital now (and even over analogs like Alpha Juno and JX-8P/10). The filter is MUCH more pleasing and flexible than the one in the latter Roland analogs (the IR3105 in the 8P/Juno 1/2 etc)

And I find it inspiring as an instrument, I would miss the hands on and I love the sound anyway, a cross between D-50 and a spaceship's engine room :)

Wanted to get a V-Synth last year, and maybe I will some day if I get a good price, but I wouldn't buy it just for a D-50 emulation anyway, would be for the weird sound mangling etc..

EDIT > I got a V-Synth not long after this post - and yes, it's amazing and the best all round synth Roland ever made.
