Expression Pedal: Volume going insane

Post by DX21 » Wed Jun 05, 2013 9:43 am

Ok, so I have my DX21 plugged into my PC and the midi volume pedal control seems to be going insane, I plug a cable in and it calms it down, but its still held above 0 where its supposed to be.

is it bad resistors? I've cleaned the contacts of crud and its still giving me trouble.

An borrowed Midi volume pedal fixes the problem, but I don't own one, does anyone know what to solder or replace inside?

:)

Does this only happen when connected to the PC?

It's called an expression pedal BTW. Most expression pedals control MIDI CC #4 but the DX21 is pretty early in MIDI terms so might not comply with this.

MIDI volume is a MIDI controller (CC #7).

You wrote you borrowed a pedal so I'll assume you don't have one yourself?
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

It seems to bother the whole thing connected or not, I dont have a pedal of my own.

Its unfortunate that my awesome keyboard has a pitch knob problem, and an expression pedal problem and a missing knob top. I really wanna get this thing into gigging shape because It makes one heck of a bassline.

Try having the cable plugged in when you switch it on, a lot of synths will auto-calibrate when you switch them on so whatever value they see at power on will be their default 0. If it's bouncing around while you switch it on that could cause the non-zero output when you have a dummy jack plugged in. Worth a shot anyway.

It sounds like the jack is normally held at 0V when no cable is plugged in, which is pretty typical. I bet there is a bad connection to that jack. Check the solder pad where it terminates with the jack board. If there is a pin floating in that jack, it would probably cause that kind of craziness.
