Hello chaps! my first post here so please bare with my noob questions.
im basically after an analogue synth that has an audio input so i can use a microphone, to mess around with crazy vocal effects, much like how brainiac, the Faint! and sfs.
noob question 1: will i be able to play with the synth if i have an audio input going into it?,
nq2: do i have to play the keys to trigger the input? i really hate that on vocoder synths ive tried.
heres a link of brainaic! and a picture of the synth he has.
http://www.kickbright.net/shows/low-brainiac.html here are some pictures!
i was looking at the roland sh-2 or sh 9
yamaha cs5
much help would be appreciated fellas, sorry for the bombardment of text.

Dude! You need a minimoog and to check out a guy called MoneyMark. Master of this technique.
Seriously though: i have done this with my sh09 a few times and yes you have to press the key for the audio to sound but you have a hold function on the vca section which will keep the key held for you. Obviously this means that the osc's are held too but clever envelope and filter settings and you can still achieve a lot of playability. I imagine most vintage synths with audio in will work this way. Other more knowledgable folk on here will tell you.

In the YouTube clip, it sounds like he is yelling through a ring modulator.

Are you looking for something that is a vocoder or just something with an input to run your voice through filters?

Re: Analogue synth Vocal input
hey guys wow thank you so much for the help!, yeah im not after a vocoder i find it too digital sounding, im more after a raw sound. yeah holding the key seems out of the question since i have a guitar in my hand alot of the time.
a ring modulator you say? i have a pedal, man, to be honest im running around like a headless chicken, i borrowed a friends minibrute synth and it was really kool, but the audio in was stuffed and didnt even work with a preamp so i couldnt test it out.
at 9.26 minutes into video he does that effect. but i still cant figure it out, does the synth produce the effect? and hes playing it at the same time, if only i knew @>@
by the way im in australia! and synths here are stupid expensive not to mention the rarity of a vintage one.
minimoog aye! ill def take a look at one
oh by the way guys can anyone figure out what synth hes actually playing ? http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/141 ... ylor+2.jpg
again sorry for the bombardment!

Re: Analogue synth Vocal input
If you're thinking stuff like The Faint, it's all external FX processors. As far as I can tell, very little if anything is being processed by their synths. As for vocoders sounding too digital, there are plenty of analog vocoders, but they might cost you a bit more than you'd like to spend. As for the Youtube clip, I'm with Z on this one. Sounds like your ticket is a ring mod pedal.

Re: Analogue synth Vocal input
Why not email the dude in the video and ask him what he uses?
I'm sure he would not mind telling you!
Anyhow, yes its a ring modulator effect and they can be built with this kit here:
http://delptronics.com/ringmodulator.php
Of course they're others ones out there.
Now the fun part is figuring out what waveform to use for this effect!
One signal is your vocals, the other can be anything.
Go nuts! Try whale sounds, car horns, or just a simple sine wave.
You'll have loads of fun.
