OK, I realize I am new to all of this but I have to say the JP-8000 is amazing.
Maybe not everything about the layout or all the small LCD, but the sounds created are wonderful.

The JP-8k is a decent piece of kit. Always perfect for instant gratification.

Digital: D-50 or JD-800 depending on your mood/taste
Analog: Jupiter 8
In my current gear: JX-3P(in some ways a nicely limited cross of sorts between a D-50 and a Jupiter 8 sound.. if you squint your ears in just the right way, and add some outboard effects)

OVERALL: JD-800 - BEST ROLAND EVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(and that's not about the synthesis or the sound - but the whole package - the only thing better than this would be a Jupiter 6/8 and even then more 'different' than better - and in some ways not as powerful, obviously)

don't get me wrong, the D-50 is one of my very favorite synths, but the V-Synth is a D-50, and a better version of it, plus it's also a V-Synth.
anyway, my pick obviously goes to the V-Synth. For my taste it is almost as if Roland made it just to make me happy. Aside from the lack of anything analog, the V-Synth is truly the culmination of decades of synthesis evolution and as for Roland it is a veritable "best of" and a near seamless coming together collection of ideas that created an amazing instrument. Analog Modeling + VariPhrase sampling + COSM processing and an array of hands-on control features = win.
.
For the second time this decade I'm going to bring this thread back to life and risk even more scorn of others, why? Because I'm still interested and because I want to update after owning a V-synth for a year or so.
I didn't have a V-synth when I wrote my original post, but I was interested in getting one.
Anyway, now their best overall synth imo is the V-Synth as many others said in this thread. That's my objective mode choice. Runners up are JD-800, D-50 and Jupiter 8. No accident each of my 4 were all flagships (for a reason). I can't sincerely claim something like the Juno 60, as nice as it is, is their best synth.
Any flaming will be ignored, mods can lock the thread if it's that abhorrent to the senses, necrothreads are actually informative and imo interesting because they show how opinions change through experience. Has anyone's else "best Roland" choice changed since 2012?

Re: Roland's greatest synth?
In case I haven't pointed it out already, I think the complete System 700 is rather nice, and so are the Jupiter-8 and VP-330.

Re: Roland's greatest synth?
Its probably something I cant find / afford. like the system100m.
Its nice to see the pieces I own mentioned.
From my experience with the d-50 and jp8000, the d-50 wins in my book.
That is probably all due to its predominant use in that time (TMNT, Akira, etc.).
The jp8000 is especially great for its layout though, you can immediately get into altering the sound.
Also, the touchstrip was a huge attraction for me. I never see anything else with that, except the ol moogs, and the yamaha CS.
From what I now know, Im guessing it is just a strip with reflective capacitance?
Anyway, from what I have been able to get my hands on, D-50 takes the cake in my book.
If I had a jupiter6 or 8 though... It would probably be 1 of those 2.

Is it trash or treasure?

Re: Roland's greatest synth?
deff the v synth, I own the original, it's probably the best digi synth ever made period. I also own a juno106 which I got the kiwi106 upgrade installed, and that has made it in my opinion just as good as a jup6 if not better. I recently got a jx10 and a jd800. both of them rock as well!

There are lots of synths with ribbon controllers (touch strips), AN1x, Prophecy to name 2 of a similar vintage as the JP8K.Algorithm wrote:Its probably something I cant find / afford. like the system100m.

Re: Roland's greatest synth?
Roland do just know how to make extremely musical and musically useful synthesizers. I've loved korgs, yamahas and aspired to the american greats but time and again Roland just seem to nail it - the right price, the right features and the right sound (for productive music rather than just impressive synth noodling)corndogssg wrote:deff the v synth, I own the original, it's probably the best digi synth ever made period. Re: Roland's greatest synth?
I recently picked up a D-50 and although I do like it, I guess that I'm just not unlocking the secrets of it or using it to its full potential. I've created some patches but they don't sound mind-blowing. I guess I should download some patches from the web to see what this thing is capable of. Haven't spent much time lately programming or writing music.

Re: Roland's greatest synth?
Lots of these retrowave dudes love the D50, but then again, they all use the same exact preset sounds, cause they're creative like that.
Re: Roland's greatest synth?
Regarding the D50's potential, check out these sounds from Carl Johnson (he sells these two patch sets, I highly recommend them):
