SEMs are a lot bigger than euro modules.

HERETIC!!! BURN THE HERETIC!!! ;) ;)

Oberheim used the SEM module as a basis for many of their synths in the mid to late 70's, such as this magnificent 8 voice, before Tom dreamed of the OBX - I can imagine where he's going with the 2 Voice Pro :)

My point is, it doesn't look like a "new" machine. It looks like Oberheim simply pieced together a few existing modules. With other synths, I can't unscrew the front panel and separate the various components of the signal path, right?!

I'm just not a fan of the look. It sounds good, of course. But it also seems wildly overpriced ($3,495 street price) considering that it consists of stuff you can already buy separately, and perhaps put together yourself (probably for less money).

I realize that it's a throwback, of sorts. But it also seems like a very primitive build technique for a synth that purports to be a 2015 release.

Of course it's primitive, it was one of the first ways of doing Polyphony.

It's basically a re-issue of the one from the 70's, so yeah it's made in 2015 but it's most definitely not trying to be modern at all. You're looking at it as if it's a new synth.

How about the Akai Timbre Wolf? That works in the same way, but doesn't have physical "modules".

If anything that deserves s**t for not being a modern design, not this.

But Oberheim seems to be going the opposite direction from guys like Dave Smith. His battle cry is "No Reissues!" Oberheim's battle cry is "All Reissues!" Oberheim seems to be trying to repackage the same s**t he built 35 years ago as a many ways as possible. Intellectually, it all seems a bit chickenshit to me. It's like the guy's afraid to do anything different. Ever.

Why is that so terrible? The SEM is a classic, and as interesting as it would be to see Tom Oberheim come up with a new product, the fact that you can buy them new for half the price of an original (and even get minor functional upgrades into the bargain) is nothing to sneer at. Is this just part of society's fetish for "progress," that people (even people in a community dedicated to vintage gear) can't fathom why anybody would choose to focus on reproducing classic designs?

To be fair he's getting on a bit in age and as far as I know his company is tiny, lucky he's doing anything at all. The SEM is great, and what people wanted him to do.

Dave Smith might not be doing re-isses but he is *definitely* trading on his past, as is Moog, as is everyone.
