What about making a VSE music compilation?

Post by briandc » Thu Oct 27, 2016 9:14 pm

Hi everyone,
anyone here ever suggested making an "album", a compilation of works by different people here at VSE? It could be used to support/promote the website, the synths, the artists, etc...

Any thoughts?

Long as we decide to have 1 entity control the entire thing, I'm down.
I elect a moderator to decide....erm....pretty much everything and I'm sure it has to run past admin or the brand owner. Can't sully or capitalize off the name VSE...in any way shape or form.
So it's probably best to NOT be officially affiliated with this site and forum.

I say:
1) Keep it entirely digital and a compilation of like, 30 tracks.
2) Additional volumes in the works for those that miss the first release.
3) No sales, just a free link....probably on Bandcamp or such.
4) Decide a theme with very few boundaries.
5) Pick an EXACT date, finished (Mastered) tracks are due.

etc....

Yes this was suggested before, and failed because the person who took it on went missing. It's a nice idea but the market is tiny I think, despite the fact that there are a lot of talented composer/ producers on here.

It's probably not the best idea to have people individually apply post production techniques to their tracks before compiling them. Ideally people would submit well mixed tracks, and they would all be mastered to sound like a unified, consistent final compilation.

Also, we would probably want to give preference to the people who post a lot, and frequently participate in on the forum. We would also probably want to discouragexplore people from submitting non vintage synth oriented songs. This is not to be elitist or anything like that, but there are SO many people making music, it would he a shame if the compilation ended up being a bunch of songs done by people who aren't interested, don't use vintage gear, aren't part of the community, but we're simply aggressive in promoting their music.

And as you've pointed out to some degree, the fact that the admin is MIA can pose problems as well if there's something affiliated with a this brand that doesn't have permission to be so.
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

Yeah, that was a long time ago. I still have my track from back then, I just checked - it was in early 2009...

I remember people trying to get this up and going back around the time I joined this forum. It seemed like it ended up being a headache and obviously ended up going nowhere. I'm afraid the same thing would happen here again. Also, some egos may be bruised if their song isn't selected for the album.
I'm not saying that it isn't a good idea, but the implementation is probably more difficult than one would think. And like was said earlier, there might not even be a market for it...who knows?
just my 2 cents....but what do I know?

There's the added difficulty of defining what is vintage and what isn't.

Vintage = vingt ans d'age = 20 years :thumbright:

Incorrect etymology, I'm afraid. The term initially applied to wine and is derived from 'vinum', the Latin word for wine, not from the French word for 20. See http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=vintage and many other sources for info. So what's a vintage synth?

This is indeed a bit more complicated than I thought! (But not impossible. ;) )

I don't see why the number of songs would have to be limited. Unless it actually gets into the hundreds..

As for synths, if it is hardware only, does that include current hardware instruments?
Also: it's true that software synths are not hardware and probably not too vintage. But there is indeed a section on this forum for them.

Maybe the project (if one were to be realized) could/should include music using synths of any type....?

I say you create an overall description of the theme.
Vague enough for wiggle room and in SPIRIT you remove all the artists/musicians/producers who need their hand held with a million questions of...Can I...what if I....

You/we can make a separate release for the software part of the forum and even one for the sampling interest.
Long as it's a FREE download link(s), that should eliminate all concerns besides who's going to master the tracks.
Keep it simple and first come, first serve basis...long as you're a forum member of some kind with some signs of activity. That should happen on its own, as long as the SUBMIT WINDOW isn't long.

You could be doing this - clearly and more simply by just grabbing tracks from the Listening Lounge area.
No one needs to make anything NEW for this. Everybody donate an already finished song for promotional reasons only.

That's why I said skip past the mastering task.
If this doesn't stay SIMPLE, it will never get done.

There's a million great ideas- that we could do- but time is a problem and responsibilities is an issue.

I'm okay with
- not liking where my song is placed on the compilation
- not liking the cover we/you used....
- hating up to 8 songs by other people (lol)
- wishing it had a better name...
- having the first few volumes arriving without one of my songs on it.

Long as everyone gets on board with that thinking, this could work....
But I've seen this on forums before and they NEVER get anything done.
Too many cooks.....

Why not just have a channel on a music site that only a moderator can post songs to.

We do have the listening lounge. Isn't this basically what it's for?

You may remember this one from a few years ago.

Compilations that are synth related have done ok, participation wise...

Here's the one synth challenge.
