2032 battery for a Juno 106 instead of a 2325 ok? (answered)

Post by part12studios » Sun Jan 15, 2017 3:28 am

Hi everyone,

So I found myself the proud owner of a Juno 106 for a fair price and opened it up and discovered the 2325 battery while still holding patches reading/writing as it should, was only putting out like .5 v.. so I took it to a local shop and had him install a user replaceable 2032 holder and battery. it works fine.. but I know it was kinda impulsive to get the guy to do it. I had the 2032 replaceable peice but it was too small for a 2325.. so both output 3v and it works.

Am I hurting the 106 by doing this or am I simply going to have to change the battery more often because the 2032 is simply smaller than the 2325?

Bonus Question.. for the 106 sliders.. one was SLIGHTLY scratchy.. can i simply shoot some fader lube in there without having to open the whole thing up or should I take a different approach with the Juno?

Thanks,
Caleb

If it's putting out the same voltage it'll be fine.

cool yea still a 3v battery.. i researched around and yea other than the physical shape (and I assume the number of "hours" the batteries are rated for) they are the same. So it's a relief to just know officially that it's not harmful and I'm glad I'll never have to pull that board again to replace a battery. :)

it is totally ok to use battery even up to 4.5V on that area. When the unit is powered on, then it is 5V anyway. :)

and yes, just add lube and just an ordinary motor oil works fine too, it never does any harm :)

@jxalex motor oil?! is that a joke? like 5w 30 motor oil? :) I'm not saying i've heard otherwise.. just wondering if thats one of those life hacks you hear about on the internet.

I use "Faderlube" from the guys who make deoxit and it has worked wonders on stuff..

You really really really really shouldn't put motor oil into the faders, it'll ruin them.

I agree. I could not bring myself to use anything but the best on this stuff. :) Faderlube forever!

I used fader spray on my J106 once when the filter cutoff slider got gravely. It worked fine. Spray it in and work the slider back and forth (gently) for a while.
Switches, knobs, buttons, LEDs, LCD screens, monitors, keys, mice, jacks, sockets. Now two joysticks!

can you actually explain why or where from that information comes, how quickly it deteorietates?

I recommended that becouse
on old carbon pots its the rather old trick -- 2 drops gasoline (as solvent and de-oxidizer) and motoroil (as lubricant) (whatever which one!),
This way it is used to de-oxidize the carbon pots and no harm done! trick used very often by old TV repairmen. The turbine oil would work well too and ball bearing grease also.

the "faderlube"....
1. On some cans the contents is silicone oil and benzene, nothing more.
Whereas what is applied by manufacturer seems to be more like lithium grease or sort of ball bearing grease.

2. Other cans which are meant for de-oxidizing and cleaning is nothing more than isopropanol . (KONTAKT 60, VIDEO 90).

This way it means that for faders work WD40 as well too.
Some other formulas known as faderlube? ;)

Thanks for sharing that @jxalex the thought of using something not for the purpose it's meant for just sounded dangerous but your explanation certainly helps explain it's not such a "dirty" trick :)

WD40 isn't bad for faders? I thought it being a solvent might dissolve things you don't want.. like if you have splashing of the product that lands on other parts of the synth.

I'm not the neatest sprayer and deoxit f5 has been amazing and very forgiving when it lands on other stuff. :)

I just stick to the items which have as much universal usage as possible, and it is about the pots which are 1..2USD. If it works then I stick to them and so I do not have to buy special chemicals. And to cheapest pots there surprisingly is no difference what way it is cleaned and I havent found method how to prolong their life (besides not to move these so often). However if that pot would cost 50USD or such then I certainly would check and search about all the info about it and do not experiment as first choice.

You make a wear to the outermost coating even when You move it. All what moves, wears out.
But this time you "wear out" the oxide dirt on it. HOwever the faders still need some sort of chemical coating, otherwise they wont last long if they come to contact in air for a prolonged time (Military grade pots are sealed hermetically).
If having many many things to maintain then I still am looking for methods how to fix them so that it will last (analog mixing consoles have many movable things).
Also the thing is that nowadays equipment details break down sooner than expected. 70s mixing consoles fader carbon coating was ca 7..8 mm thick or so, and it was bulky too.
Also the common pots had thicker coating and were much more longlasting. The new ones wear out real fast.
The russian pots and faders which are from my tape recorder which is from 1987 still work and however I rotated them every day and it was in use over 15 years! But pots in Behringer, ALTO, and other similar equipment want already replacing after couple years.
Also for the professional mixing boards have amortizing time 8 years. But consoles from 70s still work!
ALl this makes me to think that perhaps its better to replace every pot with a digital pot where the fader/pot just has the control voltage.

well the urban area air consists so many chemicals which eats and makes unwanted things with virtually everything, from copper and ending with cement statues which actually makes me to think that perhaps its best to coat with everything with protective coating.

To illustrate which kind of "good stuff" we are breathing in ... my another colleauge told me this :

he had at his county over several decades some russian power tubes, and all that military grade equipment was with high silver content, coated with silver and it did NOT blackened, and they were ever-shiny as always... well, better than polished stainless brass plate.
Then he took those power tubes to electronic shop in a middle-sized town with 130 000 people and near to road with high traffic during 90s. It took less than couple months and all that silver went black!

reading...

Deoxit is in as 2 different solutions in different concentrations.
So, it is meant that one is for cleaning and the second one is as lubricant (that Deoxit Fader).

...still where is the description about its contents? (How does it smell? :) :D :D )
