Now that is pretty interesting! Wonder what price/availability will be.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Not to rain on the DSI/sequential parade, but does the world really need ANOTHER basic, super portable, monophonic, analog synthesizer? These things are the Starbucks of the Synth world. At least this one's DSI!
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

+1

At least they should give it some unique twists. It's looks as if Roland had this planned for release and DSI and Pioneer bought it from them for cheap.

As I'm working in music retail, I've seen this trend for years already: everyone thinks of the same small idea, it sounds about the same, it just looks different. It's almost as if manufacturors are breaking down the big synths of the 90's into small parts, souping up those parts, and then sell those parts.

In a way, we can say the same about guitar players. Strings, wood, pick-ups, things... guitar! Every damn year again the same thing, minus one teeny detail that's somewhat different or new.

And I don't intend to drag this one into the real of software, but (apart from zillions of freebies dragged/dropped together with one of those modular builders) I've the impression that programmers are far more open and liberal to really inventing new things, without (artificial/commercial) limitations. Just to name something: why are new synths still capped to roughly 6, 8 or 12 voices (or less) when my far cheaper PC happily plays over a thousand of 'm? Why do manufacturors build some synths without presets and storing your own? And you know me: I'm all about sound design, it's not about being lazy, but I just want to f*cking store a sound I've made. Is that too much to ask for?

You know, in the old days, the limitations were really based on what was technically possible. Today, all these limitations are artificial. That's the difference. Back then it was all built as good as they could, today a marketing team tones down the functionality of new ideas.

Ahwell [/dinerbreak], on with more NAMM news. :read:

The design makes me think of the old Firstman SQ01, which predated the TB303 by about a year.

That's the one! I was thinking, "Boy ... this looks like something ... " but I just couldn't place it before I ran off to work this morning - thanks for digging it up.
