Kawai SX-240 Split & Dual Mode Voice Loss - Ideas?

Post by flpfire109 » Wed Nov 11, 2020 9:57 pm

Hi Everyone,

This forum has been so helpful to me in the past. I have another problem that I would like to tackle and was hoping I could get a little direction. I have an absolutely wonderful Kawai SX-240 that plays beautifully in 8 voice poly mode. However, when switching to either split or dual mode, a voice is lost. In dual mode, on every 4th note, only the upper voice plays. In split mode, I only get 3 voice polyphony in the lower section. Has anyone seen this issue before? Any particular ICs I should check? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Stay safe everyone!

Regards,
Jack

Hi,
I used to have an SX240 myself, so I get what you mean. If only one of the eight voices is no longer functioning, then probably a hardware problem. To figure out what is wrong, you will have to peek inside. I have never opened it up myself, so there I can't help you.
But look for an area where you see the same pattern in the PCB repeated 8 times (in case the voices are single ones, which I assume or else you would probably have lost 2 or 4 voices simultaneously), and check if there is anything different between them:
- a chip that is no longer positioned in its seat?
- an area that is particularly dirty because of for instance a spilled drink?
- a resistor that is burnt?
- a solder joint that is cracked that should be redone?
