Re: Korg Wavestation WS1
Another question - does anyone know whether the PCM or PROG slot memory cards possess a battery? I've been told that cards for the Korg Prophecy do contain a battery, so wondered if it was the same for Wavestation cards, especially as one of my five is no longer working.

Re: Korg Wavestation WS1
There are two types of cards, ROM cards do not need batteries and RAM cards do.
The Korg MPC-series ROM cards contain new progs/combis.
The Korg MSC-series ROM cards contain new PCM samples.
Since ROM doesn't need power to retain data, these cards have no batteries.
Cards that require a battery are the MCR-series RAM type. These are cards meant to store user data.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Thanks, that's very helpful.meatballfulton wrote: ↑Thu Mar 17, 2022 12:49 pmThere are two types of cards, ROM cards do not need batteries and RAM cards do.

The cards I have are Korg WPC and WSC, not MPC and MSC. Are these the same types of cards with a different series name?

Yes, they are Korg factory cards. They do not have or need batteries.

Thanks, that is extremely helpful. Nothing on Reverb at the moment, but looking at how much Wavestations have NOT been going for on ebay recently, I suspect I'll end up listing it with confirmed issues and see how my luck is. But I'll certainly check out cost of addressing issues first.

Re: Korg Wavestation WS1
Well , for me, I v invested so much time & money in my hardware WS1, ( over years) as well as I know it well, & find it even better to program than the software, ie, muscle memory, many years of excitedly programming it back in the 90s & early this century, plus it has a really nice & clear programming OS .desmond wrote: ↑Sat Feb 12, 2022 2:30 am"Was it me, literally two posts up..?"
No, or maybe, but years ago.
" For me, it's the cutting bits off, desoldering, carefully sliding in bits, re-soldering and so on that worries me. The dissassembly process, or even the time involved don't bother me so much..."
Yes those areas stress me too, or that I might break something, such an awkward space to work in & overwhelming amounts of information
" The plugin is more hi-fi, crisper, clearer and like a veil is lifted, so technically sounds "better" (objectively) but maybe less *preferable* (subjectively), depending on whether you see the hi-fi quality as a good thing or not. I like both, but if I could have only one, I'd go for the plugin, because you can always rough it up, but you can't make the hardware cleaner......plus the extended polyphony goes a long way.
I just wish I could send system exclusive files/ patches from the software ws to the hardware though.
Its like an old friend , even though Iv only played it once this year. It rewards time invested in it, making it ones own individual instrument is essential (to me), as with them all, but the Wavestation I find is fairly bland , unless programmed it to taste.
Re: Korg Wavestation WS1
Why? The only thing the software has is one extra modern bank that uses features the hardware doesn't have (eg the new filter). Everything else is all the same standard WS and WS SR presets that are easily available for the hardware, and virtually all the third-party sounds online are in SYX format the hardware can use.
And as you say, you aren't using the software as an editor as you prefer to edit on the hardware, and the plugin offers almost no way of organising patches, so i'm not sure why you need to send patches from the plugin to the WS...?
Re: Korg Wavestation WS1
Hi Desmond, Im only finding your above post now.
You made a good point & I agree with you, except for the 'random patch generator' on the updated software W.S. I like random patch generators even though they often produce non useful results, the 1 in 10 interesting result is worth it.
Having said that I havnt played any of my Wavestations for a long time.
