Anyone have any experience with Gotek USB floppy emuators? I got one for my SY-77 from Mono Tanz on Reverb and I have finally got the hardware working (had to get the right adapter and t-shoot a bit) and I have a usb stick with a blank 720k image on it. The synth can read the bytes free and I can format and save to it but when I load back what I saved it says Bad Disk. Anyone happen to have any advice on this error?
Re: SY-77 + Gotek USB Disk Errors
Okay I seem to have sorted this. The Gotek floppy emulators it turns out are a bit tricky to set up AND to use in some cases. Definitely NOT a simple thing if you are considering doing this. In my case the error was caused by a particular version of the Gotek hardware using an Artery chip which seems to have limited memory. This in combination with using HFE file format was apparently causing my "Bad Disk" errors. When I use IMG format files for my virtual floppies things seem to be working.

I avoid FB - sadly I can't now find r-massive's excellent webpage on how to setup an Gotek on an ensoniq
Re: SY-77 + Gotek USB Disk Errors
Yeah totally, I imagine that someone might someday have a similar issue. I have this all working now but I still cannot get an existing SY-77 disk file to load. I can send patches over MIDI though and save/load at will and that is really cool. I was kinda hoping the drive would pretty much come with a ton of patches easy to load onto it but so far that does not seem to be available. Folks in the SY-77 group on FB have not responded to my questions about loading from Gotek usb. who knows whats going on with that. I will say that USB floppy emulation is not at all as simple and easy to use and I thought it might be. Word to the wise, know what youre getting into if you go into this area.

Re: SY-77 + Gotek USB Disk Errors
I am surprised at this. I have now fitted 2 Gotek to Ensoniq EPS16+ sampler and think they are wonderful. As far as the 16+ is concerned it thinks there is a real floppy drive still in. I can now do all my file manipulations on a PC. I would think the Yam is no different. My Goteks came with OS v3.30
All I can say is, "disks" are stored as DSKA0000.img - DSKA0001.img and so on. Maybe that's what needed a starting disk image, dunno. Don't forget there is the FF.CFG which lives on the Gotek-USB - take a look in that make sure you have all the parameters set. It is surprisingly easy, just take time to read the descriptions to make sure all the parameters (for Gotek configuration) are what the Yam wants.
Hmm.. maybe, as the Gotek come with no USB, we buy a USB so it comes with no patches or anything. Assuming the Gotek has firmware, it then needs the FF.CFG, then some way to create a Yam disk image, think blank formatted floppy disk. On that patches are saved, Patches are not saved to the Gotek directly, but to a virtual-floppy on the Gotek. I would think you already know all this.
Awaits TM to come tell me I'm wrong.
Behave Tom, rather get over yourself
