Help w/ zener identification from Elka panther combo organ

Post by TimeOut4Fun » Tue Mar 07, 2023 1:12 am

I have a shorted diode in the power regulation section of an Elka Panther 100.
Here is a picture of it:
elka_diode.jpg
The cathode is on the right, but isn't marked.
The schematic calls it TZ109
elka_panther_100_psu.jpg
The input voltage to the lower bridge rectifier from the transformer is 50VAC,
I found some old ITT diodes on ebay that were marked ZX 6.2 for a 6.2v zener (although they were the stud mount type)
It looks like this one might say ZX 6.1, although I can't tell which way the text is oriented.
Would a 6.1v zener make sense in this circuit?
The desired output voltage is supposed to be -24VDC according to the schematic.
When I search for 'TZ109 zener diode" I get nothing.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I have no idea about TZ109.
Diode in picture is a BZX61 type of zener diode but this is the series code and not the voltage reference.
In order to find out the exact voltage, you need to read the other text printed on the diode.
Usually there is an additional code like C11 ( 11 Volts), C15 ( 15Volts ) , C24 ( 24 volts) etc.
Good luck !

Edit: I am no EE , but it should be a 24V zener diode @ 1.3Watts.
What puzzles me is that I dont recognize the C24 code printed on the diode.
But since you should not trust strangers you meet over the internet, if you dont find any other information, try a 24V zener diode with the PSU disconnected from the main boards, and first check that you are getting -24V ( or -23.3V) before powering up the whole unit.

Edit 2: Is it C27 printed on the diode?

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
The text is so faded even with two magnifying glasses I can barely discern the voltage reference,
but now that I know the first character on the bottom is a 'C', the numbers next to it appear to be the same character.
So I'm going to guess it's C22, close enough to a 24v drop I suppose.
I'll be sure to check the voltage after replacing it, before sending it to the power amp.
I really appreciate your help, Yekuku!

I have never seen an elka panther out in the wild but its weird operating voltages got me interested.
It had a look at schematics and it seems that -10V is used for the audio signal path and -24V for amp/speaker.
The -24 should not be critical , my guess is that both 22V /24V or even 27V zeners would work.
Also, investigate why the zener failed, there might be a fault in amp section that draws too much current and stresses the diode.

Yes, there was a germanium transistor with a broken leg in the power amp, so I've already replaced that. But that was probably the reason for the stress to the zener diode.
I've got the line output side working fairly well now, it sounds great. They are a pain to work on though, like all combo organs. I much prefer working on modern vintage synthesizers ( is that even a thing?-- bit of an oxymoron there!)
Thanks again!

I hear you , a pain to work on indeed.
I had a disgusting / stinky Farfisa Combo Compact that I was trying to repair and most of the transistors had broken legs.
All voice cards had the cables soldered on them making them impossible to remove easily in order to repair them.
I had to cut all the cables , I repaired all the voice cards but never found the time to redo all the wiring, so it is left abandoned at friend's basement for years now.

Can't say that I blame you for abandoning that one.
It's a very thin line between trash and treasure with these instruments.
Just makes you appreciate things like voltage regulators and TOG chips.
